Come Meet GarageGames This Summer
by Deborah M. Fike · 07/07/2009 (2:11 pm) · 34 comments

In my personal life, summer means a lot of things: flying kites on the beach, backyard BBQs, and day hiking trips to exotic locales. (Note pics above. Those were all taken within the last two weeks. I take summer very seriously.) But in my professional life, summer means a string of summer conferences. I've been doing a lot of planning for various events this summer and wanted to give everyone a heads up on where you can catch us.
DevelopWhen: July 14 - 16
Where: Brighton, United Kingdom
Who: Brett Seyler
All you British developers are in luck. Brett's doing some summer travel and will be making a pit stop at the Develop Conference in Brighton. Send him a line at (bretts AT garagegames DOT com), and he'll schedule some time to meet with you.
Casual ConnectWhen: July 21 - 23
Where: Seattle, WA
Who: Deborah Marshall, Michael Perry, Davey Jackson
Casual Connect is one of my favorite conferences to meet a bunch of developers from all walks of industry. We'll have a booth set up on the second floor and will show our first alpha demos of Torque 2D (and take video for those of you who can't be there).
SIGGRAPHWhen: August 3 - 7
Where: New Orleans, LA
Who: Davey Jackson, Matt Fairfax, Tom Spilman
SIGGRAPH is the premier graphics conference in the country. The latest research in all rendering tech (not just games) will be there, and so will we. Feel free to poke Davey if you want to talk about commercial licenses. And I'm sure you could talk Torque 3D with Tom and Matt, if you ask nice.
Game Developers Conference EuropeWhen: August 14 - 16
Where: Cologne, Germany
Who: Brett Seyler
It's the second stop on Brett's European summer tour. If you missed Brett in the UK, you can catch him in Germany. As always, he'll be available for answering questions on Torque tech and on any promising business development opportunities.
Penny Arcade ExpoWhen: September 4 - 6
Where: Seattle, WA
Who: Derek Bronson, Steven Garcia, Dr. Wiley, Crash
If you've never been to PAX, you're missing out on a good time. With more nerds than you can handle, you will find someone who also remembers your favorite old skool game. Stop by our booth to see the latest games we've pushed to InstantAction or talk some tech with the Torque reps.
Austin Game Developers ConferenceWhen: September 15 - 18
Where: Austin, TX
Although this conference is a long ways off into the "Autumn" category, it is one of our favorite events of the year. It doesn't hurt that it's in Sickhead Games' backyard, meaning you have a good chance of seeing the whole crew. We'll try to show off our latest R&D at the conference, as well as feature some prominent Torque games to play.
Hope to see you soon at a conference near you! If you have questions about any of these events, fire away in the comments below.

I'll see what I can do with my connections over at the Neal Blaisdell and see if we can get a yearly Game Developers conference over here. This would also help to get some of Asian/Russian developers to not have to fly all the way over to the mainland for a conference - just a hop, skip and a jump to Hawaii.

We need to get conferences out here in Hawaii again - after Square Enix and Konami left Hawaii, there hasn't been any of it out here.I'll see what I can do with my connections over at the Neal Blaisdell and see if we can get a yearly Game Developers conference over here. And just as an FYI, if you're coming to AGDC and have a game demo, we'll be hosting another "Torque game" machine so you can show it off in our booth. It's been successful for us the last two GDCs, so why stop a good thing?

Hawaii conference? I'd love to go. For "business" of course. :)And just as an FYI, if you're coming to AGDC and have a game demo, we'll be hosting another "Torque game" machine so you can show it off in our booth. It's been successful for us the last two GDCs, so why stop a good thing?

I just got back from a friggin world tour. I'll be at AGDC though, and very possibly SIGGRAPH. I rarely pass up a chance to go to Naw'leans for Po Boys and debauchery.

The fun. You need to create a European office badly.
Edit: The summer pictures look like fun! (Though the water shader looks better in Torque3D than that fake blue pond. ;)

GG you should definately get your IA counterparts to get their asses up to Edmonton and setup shop here with some IA games being played for prizes.

Dang. I'm in Frankfurt on August 13th en route to Dresden - my old internship stomping grounds. And then I'm actually visiting relatives in Dortmund on the 28th or so.... so close, yet so far....

Top right photo tabloid headlines:
"First instance of Koi Pond cosplay encountered in the wild."

Quick question, I know GG used to do their own conference. Has that plan changed for future events or is that no longer going to be the case?

I'll be at PAX... all the way from Scottsdale, AZ (Phoenix Suburb, for you out of staters, and according to South Park, the most terrible place on earth for goth kids/vampire kids).Brian

Very cool. I actually submitted an abstract for a lecture at this year's AGDC, and lo and behold, it actually got accepted! So I get a free pass this year, and I'm stoked to make the trip. We should have a working Vespers demo by then, so I'd love to meet up with any GG'ers and community members, if interested.

@Stephen: We did hold IGC, but as of this moment, we have no plans to hold one this year. We considered it, and it's not completely off the table yet, but it's unlikely for this year. We were able to meet more community members in 2008 by sending more employees to more conferences, so we're leaning towards doing that again this year.
