Ork Warfare - the journey of a teenage game developer :D

Hey all!

Ever since I was in Year 6, I have always wanted to make my own computer game. Then when one of my friends also shared his desire, he showed my TGE 1.5.2. After buying the engine, I was ready! I went through the getting started document and learnt the basics of the world design tools and torque script.

Now, only 3 years later in year 9, I have nearly completed a small game which I started about 1 year ago, on and off through the holidays and school :D

Basically, my game, Ork Warfare, was just a little project to teach myself more about Torque. I started by implementing what I had learnt in GameOne into a starter.fps folder. I then started experimenting with different terrain textures. Not being much of an artist (3D wise) I purchased TA Combo #1. I used that for my buildings with some other models from Apparatus and the default ork as all my characters/enemies.

I spent my time putting together a pretty nice level comprising of 3 provinces: central Province, Western Province and Golgotha. Below are 3 videos showing each province:

Golgotha:

Central Province:

Western Province:

and then the Eastern Province from the new version:

I then changed the torque logo item with some treasures from FroGames Dungeon pack. I played through collecting the 5 treasures and soon realised it was insanely easy! Even though this was my first game, it needed some enemy AI to hunt me down!

I then came across the Improved AI Guard Unit resource. I implemented that and added my evil Rebel Orks!

This was the completed version of my original Ork Warfare game.

I then revisited it and added some more complex levels with cars and friendly talking orks. I then pieced it all together with these new features:

- new province (see video below – Eastern Province)
- 3 extra levels
- Treasures replaced with gold coins…with now about 25 of them XD and more Rebel Orks :D
- LAN multiplayer
- New GUI!!!!!

Anyway…thanks for reading about my game making experience with TGE 1.5.2 from a Year 9 boy’s point of view. At the moment I am trying to get some money to buy Torque 3D, so if anyone wants to support me, you can buy a copy of my original game for $6.00 (Asutralian, so about $3.50 USD) or my newer version with much more for only $10 (early adopters) just go to blackapplegames.webs.com and click on Ork Warfare and purchase :D

NOTE: On my site, Ork Warfare and Castle Adventure are listed as separate games, whereas they are both in the one game and this new Ork warfare isn’t listed. But if you click Purchase, you just fill in a contact form, so I can contact you about postage/download and the fact that you want the new one :D

as a observation, awesome that you finished a game, but.. maybe look into getting rid of all the prefabs :) that will totally make the game yours and give you a bit of step up over , maybe for Ork Warfare 2?

@Matt, Yeah i have read some of your blogs, and your little experiments are great! What I took a long time to learn is to start with something VERY small, and build upon it. Eg. I started with the Getting Started Doc, then did that in starter.fps then added more art (granted...it wasn't mine) then made a challenge (enemies and an underground maze) and worked on a few minor things like a GUI, which I am overall very pleased with (made in PowerPoint 2007)

@Edward, It isn't 100% complete...just need to fix up multiplayer by making a cool city level or something :D But i will definatly be chnaging the art to something unique...but i'll be waiting until my own art is off a decent quality before I replace the Tim Aste stuff! :D
