GDNet: Weekend Reading
by Drew -Gaiiden- Sikora · 05/16/2009 (7:15 pm) · 0 comments
What's this? Has Weekend Reading moved to a new time slot? Well, no - I just need to get back to a regular schedule. These last two weeks of conference travel have got me pretty off beat. Look for the next Weekend Reading to pop up on Friday as usual again starting this week. Hope everyone has a great weekend!
Journal Land Pick of the Week
BrokenThorn Entertainment - Crypter has released his 20th installment in the OS Dev Series - FDC Programming. In it he covers: FDC and FDD History, Disk Layout, CHS, LBA, FDD Structure, FDC Hardware, Interfacing with the FDC, FDC registers and commands. He also talks a bit about his Neptune Boot Library, which is a library that makes it very easy to develop C boot loaders and startup applications using Microsoft Visual C++ 2008, or any compiler (hopefully) that can support Win32 compliant PE executable images
From the Staff
* Gaiiden's Scroll - in this week's Sitrep I give a quick report from the LOGIN conference, shuffle my IGC East write up to next week, and explain why everyone's ratings have dropped since we started removing Mod rank from various members
Project Updates
* Journal of MrCpaw - MrCpaw details some updates and progress for his latest game project, Holy Warfare: Demon Brutes, along with some new screens and concept art
* Journal of Aardvajk - Aardvajk details the scripting engine for Squishy, in which he declares the compiler and VM "basically finished"
* Chronicles of the Hieroglyph - Jason Z has produced the first very basic render with his D3D11 rendering engine, and briefly discusses what's next
* epic.fail - evolutional shows how sometimes you just have to roll your own - in his case it would be a map editor for his game after trying out the XNA Mappy Loader on CodePlex
* Oddgames development journal - O-san has the Bullet physics library working in his game, and has a short video demonstrating simple gravity. He also wants to know what type of control scheme he should implement for his game - Point and click style, like Diablo or Cursor keys + key for jumping
* Tachyon Wars - johny5 needs help deciding on a ship model to use out of 4 possibilities. Seems like the consensus has been #2 - I think he should build the model to work with shaders that let people choose the color of various features on the ship.
* Under a ShadowyTree - Black Knight has released a new build of Dark Age with the game's first dungeon
* Ye Olde Ramblings - Telastyn has been working on getting the documentation for Tangent fleshed out and is looking for feedback on what's been done so far, including: statements, methods and phrases
* Gauntlets of Recursion (+7) - HopeDagger shows off a new model he made, and also talks about texture baking, which is a very useful technique for performance enhancement, and was tip #10 for Better Programmer Art
Game Dev Stuffs
* On the path with a ramblin' man - jollyjeffers has continued working on his LOD algorithms from last week, where he put together a Compute Shader to help massage the heightmap values. He's not too happy with the results though and starts working out various possible solutions
* iHero - darkpegasus is still seeking a solution to plug up the memory leakage in his iPhone title. He also has additional memory concerns later on in the week.
* Phyletic gradualism - sprite_hound,in addition to showing off his dynamic octree, talks about how he uses Lua files to load configuration data for his game
* So much for Creativity - SiCrane pipes up to point out a bug in some C++ code he found in the publisher-supplied exam questions for a beginner's C++ book.
* DruinkJournal - Evil Steve lists 4 reasons why he's ditching VMR-9 and going back to DirectShow
* Merry Prankster Games - gdunbar talks about pricing your game for the indie market, citing blog posts from Jeff Vogel and his own experience to conclude that you shouldn't have to try to undersell the market, and that pricing your title for what you feel it's worth is the way to go
Other Stuffs
* The Life of Corman - Corman goes into a scientific analysis of what the Red Matter in Star Trek could possibly be
* Trapper Zoid's Trapper Keeper - Trapper Zoid has started up a new blog site
Stop by and say hi to new Journal Land citizen JPatrick!
