Getting Some Traction

by Edward F. Maurina III · 04/24/2009 (4:45 pm) · 5 comments

This is a quick update to keep folks (who care) in the loop on what I'm working on and what I'm actually getting done.

Site Updates
I've been working hard this year, putting together a site that works for me (easy to maintain and add to), while working for you (having useful content). This effort is finally paying off.
If anyone reading has a few minutes, I'd truly appreciate it if you would take a quick tour and let me know what you think as comments to this blog. I'm most concerned with load times, navigability, and the usefulness of content.

If you're short on time, but curious about what I might consider useful (on my site), just follow any of these direct links that interest you instead:
- Resources
-- Torque Script Tool Kit
-- TGB Templates
- Support
-- The Game Programmer's Guide to Torque
-- Multiplayer Gaming and Engine Coding ...
- Blog Tags
-- GDC
-- Torque Announcments

Task Updates
I'm always working on bunch of things, but I imagine that the following will be of the most interest to folks who follow my blogs here.
- GPGT Disk for TGEA Canceled - I'm sorry to say, I canceled this effort. I ran into too many parts of the kit that required me to regenerate or re-create content. This happened because the kit was highly specialized and I departed from the standard project layout. If I had retained a layout similar to the one GG provides in the default starter kits I'd have been much better off. So, I apologize, but it is time for me to move on to other work.
- New GPGT Chapter Released - Thanks to John Kabus (of Synapse Gaming) and AK Peters I was just recently able to release a new down loadable chapter for GPGT, discussing the lighting features found in TGE 1.52. (Note: Much of this chapter is derived from John's original Torque Lighting Kit document.)

What would you ask for? - Re-Redux
downloads.roaminggamer.com/gglinks/090210/questions.jpgQuite some time ago I blogged about "your wishes" as a community. Specifically, I asked you to tell me what you would want me to do if you were my boss. Although I haven't blogged much, I have been taking these responses very seriously. Having said that, I'm ready to announce some progress on your requests:

"Make a Torque Script Repository (and handle contributions)" - First, I must say that the GG site is actually just that. It is a repository containing the knowledge and efforts of literally thousands of users. Furthermore, it is backed by an awesome search engine which makes finding code and scripts very easy. However, I understand that this request was really asking for me to refine this kind of knowledge (specifically scripting) into a usable collection of scrips and furthermore to provide some kind of support of the inclusion of new content. To satisfy this request, I have released the "Torque Script Tool Kit".

"HOW to make X game guide/tutorial" + "Books and/or Tutorials for TGB" - Over the last few months, I have been working on a set of products that I am calling the Roaming Gamer "Make A Game Series". The first two installments in this series are:
1. Make a Shooter w/ Torque Game Builder
2. Make an RPG w/ Torque Game Builder.

Neither of these entirely finished, but it won't be too long. Meanwhile, you can track my progress here.

Well, I think that is it for today's update. I hope everyone is making great progress on their games and projects and enjoying life. If you're here in Oregon, I hope you've been taking advantage of the weather.

Cheers,

Ed

Your site is horribly slow to load. (as you already stated) It looks good tho. I'll check it out again after the download I'm doing is done. (don't think it has anything to do with slow loading. :-D )
