Start developing with TGEA

First of all, I want to say hello to you all. I'm a new owner of TGEA, but have quite some experience in coding and game design (the technical and strategic parts, not art).

Even before I purchased my license, I recognized TGEA is not an easy tool. We'll see what T3D will bring, but for now I have to say, the documentation could be better for sure.

That said, there is a LOT of information in all the resources. I spend the last two weeks researching and playing around with the tools. Finally things start to make sense, and it is time for a little beginners project.

I'm a big fan of RPGs, and my first project will be a MMO beating WoW ... o, just kidding of course ;)

The real project goes like this:

Make a house with several rooms. The house will have a door you need to open to enter. To open it, you'll have to press a button (ring a bell). Inside there will be some objects. These can be destroyed and when you do so, other objects appear. Same goes with some enemy: kill him and get some item as a reward. There will be a cursor which changes style depending on what kind of object it points. Perhaps right click shows some context menu, like inspect / attack / open ...

Since I'm not a great artist, the art assets will have to come from somebody else. I'll start with free stuff (TurboSquid has some good starter objects).

I plan to post my experiences and findings here, maybe this helps some others.

That's it for today. Have a good time and don't forget there is life outside computers !

Welcome, Wolfgang!

I hope you will find this community as helpful as I did when I first tried my teeth on TGEA.

From the simple and thorough goals you've set out to achieve, I can tell that you have a good understanding about how to get down and tame this beast.

For free objects, make sure you check out the forums, there are some really nice freebies that are Torque ready.

Now that's a good plan for someone new to learn how to use Torque. And hey, add in some story, more interaction, a village or two, wilderness, and a bit of travel and you'll be well on the way towards that MMO you were laughing about.

Just echoing Konrad here, but you'll find some decent (if not better) artwork scattered around the forums. Also, keep browsing those resources for information -- there's a wealth of it in practical examples here.

Good luck!
