New GG Site Bugged Yet Again?

by 'Sidikian' · 01/26/2009 (9:53 am) · 20 comments

New Site Bugged Yet Again? Is it just me or are the previous blogs unable to be reached? Also I can't seem to find my most recent blog post (before this one of course) anywhere, which would mean the time I've already taken to post it was a waste...

I went to go and find my recent blog post about learning 3D Modeling so that I could work on it and went to check the second page of blogs because mine had gotten moved off the first page do to new blogs. So I click on the page 2 link at the bottom of the page, wait for the load, and it redirects me back to the main page of gg and says "Page Not Found" at the top of the page! You gotta be kidding me! Now we can't even successfully find recent blogs that get moved off the main page.

And to make it even worse, when I searched my name to find a previous blog of mine so that I could find my most recent blog through my blog list on it, it seems as though my latest blog doesn't even exist at all.

Some of these "improvements" that come along with the new site have left me a little annoyed, we can't even find our most recent blog via our account anymore and now this.

Loss of time and effort by our community members=loss of willing to bother sharing information to begin with. Please GG get this fixed and fast!

Update, seems as though once I've posted this blog the blog about Learning 3D Modeling magically appeared on my recent blog list, but this still doesn't fix the issue of not being able to go to any of the other blogs by click on page 2,3,etc. link at the bottom of the blogs page. Nor does it fix the problem with our profile pages now being left totally unpersonalized.

I liked before when you found someone's recent blog that you liked and you could use their profile page as a hub to find other blogs, and posts that either they made or commented on.

There's an old saying "why kick a running horse?" but I'd imagine you won't understand my point.

@Brandon: I used to work in web development. If I had this many bugs after deploying to production, it would have been considered a disaster.

This isn't a GG bash post. But I think it's fair for folks to comment when features of the site break. The new site looks fine but its roll-out has been sloppy. They could have exercised more patience prior to launch, had a more realistic dev / test environment, etc, etc.

At least the forums are working :) I'm sure they will be fixing it all up in a day or so...

-holding off, for how long... they sure kicked their most precious right in the groin

I mentioned this yesterday in their -wowzers- blog, visiting here is a pest these days. (ye, had I deployed this at a customer, Id be sacked)

I cant see my watched threads, cant see my project or find threads/blogs done by fav. folks anymore. My project mate cant even log on to the site, and the search function cant find him at all.

This site have lost 75%+ of its community feel/support, man its such a shame. And to think, that they even claim that this unrolled mess where tested properly beforehand -is pulling more than legs :/

Brandon is trying really hard...

Scott, I noticed the same behavior on the site yesterday. If it's been fixed, great. Your post was totally relevant. :)

I'm just happy my account is at least working. I'd keep getting an error whenever I logged in. Hopefully that's gone now.

How long will the page links for the blogs go unfixed, I wonder. Not a very good way to prove GG is heading in a new direction, it is. How much GG cares about it's community, it shows.

I agree Scott it's a huge mess. I've just come back to GG after a long time away (a year plus) to see what is new and this is what I get to come back to. No functional forum searches, broken blogs, broken resource pages, TBN doesn't function properly or redirects to broken pages ... the list goes on and on. Not only that it seems others are taking their forum posts off to functioning forums on other sites making it extremely difficult to get information on any new details (or any information at all). I only managed to get to this post via a Google search. This is obviously extremely frustrating to the point that I'm looking for alternative engines with better support ...

@Scott and Ian - You guys are late to the show, but if you want, I will send you links to the threads and blogs showing the bug fixes. Each week we've corrected a nice list of bugs and added more functionality.

If we didn't care about the community, we would just remove the forums and blogs or not provide any patches. I wouldn't be doing my normal monthly blog, running IRC hour, or answering e-mails directly when users have issues. Relax.

@Ian - I fail to see the logic in switching engines because of a website change. I was a little frustrated about not having my watched list, but that was fixed within a week, along with a lot of other things. Nothing on this site changed the engine code you work with.

Late to the show? It's amusing you that you'd compare the site to a show, but yes I would appreciate those links seeing as though they are not easy to find.

Also I understand things have been fixed, but what good is it if while somethings get fixed others get rebroken and wait till later to become fixed?

My main point being simply this:
I've been trying to share what little knowledge of 3D modeling that I've gained with the community to try and help those interested to be able to build their own models for torque. So when I worried that my recent work hand been lost do to bugs with the site you act as though I have no merit in my thoughts. I suggest you rethink your choice of words Michael. After all are you not an employee of GG and am I not a customer?

When the site first rolled out, it *was* like a show...drama, passion, arguments, threats, and I think there was a love story somewhere in the mix =)

Quote:while somethings get fixed others get rebroken and wait till later to become fixed?

Pretty much. The web team has been working diligently and non-stop to get all the community features back up and running.

Quote:So when I worried that my recent work hand been lost do to bugs with the site you act as though I have no merit in my thoughts.

Your words inferred that GG does not care about the community, or we are heading down a path where we will no longer support them. That is not going to happen.

Quote:I suggest you rethink your choice of words Michael. After all are you not an employee of GG and am I not a customer?
I am an employee. You are a community member, which means I value your opinion very highly.

Keep in mind I was a community member before I was hired, and am still a community member like yourself. Nothing I said was vitriolic, I just wanted to assure you that we know there are bugs but they are being fixed as fast as possible. If you still think there is something wrong with what I said, please e-mail me directly and we can talk further in private.

Edit - I will post the links in a minute, just have to copy the hyperlinks.

1. I have nothing to discuss with you "in private".

2. As a GG employee your actions and words reflect on GG whether you like it or not.

3. Your comment about "Late to the the show" was meant insultingly whether you want to admit to it or not. I check GG's site pretty often and have a decent idea what's going, but just because I didn't find your we're gonna fix bug list buried beneath heaps of replys or tucked away in some hidden corner doesn't mean I was "Late to the show".

Also, if you would have actually read my blog, maybe you'd of understood my point about "So when I worried that my recent work hand been lost do to bugs with the site you act as though I have no merit in my thoughts" and how that relates to caring about the community.

I understand things take time to implement and I understand GG feels that it needs to move past the little guy and the dreamers, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

1. Ok
2. Fully realized and completely agree, which is why I'm a little less fiery than I was when I was not representing GG.
3. 100% not meant to be insulting, merely saying that a lot of this has been posted previously. Which is why I offered to post the links. If you were insulted, then I apologize sincerely. However, I was not posting to insult you.

I read your blog, but was replying to the follow up comment: "How much GG cares about it's community, it shows."

Going on the point that I represent GG, the fact that I post in blogs, reply to forums, write documentation, lurk in the IRC channel, and help community members with their code does show how GG feels about the community.

By the by, you you can now get to the other pages of blogs. That was fixed this morning.

Already noticed that the other blog pages links work now and I'm great full, just feel it took longer than it should. You see when someone posts a blog it has but a short life span before it's pushed off the main page and if the other pages of blogs don't work that blog just lost it's time that someone will notice it.

I enjoy feedback and it helps drive me and I'm sure others feel the same. Now do you understand my point a little better?
