Terrain Editing Tutorials Series

68.233.5.139/~transfer/Pics/larae.jpg In our ongoing commitment to improve documentation and the new user experience, I'd like to give you a preview of our first video tutorial series. In this 7 part series I walk beginners through the recreation of the Oregon coast. There may even be a few tricks that experienced level artists pick up :)

After completing this series you will be able to create a new mission, add a heightmap, edit the terrain, apply textures to the terrain, add water and fog, adjust sky and sun parameters, and fill your mission with objects such as rocks, trees and grass using Torque's powerful replicators.

The following videos were created using TGEA 1.7.1 and will be updated for the new Torque 3D tools.

Part One: Creating and Adding a Heightmap

Part Two: Terrain Editing Tools

Part Three: Procedural Texturing

Part Four: Painting the Terrain

Part Five: Waterblocks

Part Six: Atmosphere

Part Seven: Grass & Shape Replicators

I'm really looking forward to feedback on this series. We're working hard to make Torque 3D easier for new users. I have several other series in the works and am interested in hearing ideas on other tutorials the community would like to see.

Thanks!
Lara Engebretson

Absolutely amazing work Lara. These videos are definitely something to be proud of.

I want to thank you for helping us fill a major gap in our site/docs, and I look forward to working with you more and the next video series =)

Been using these as reference, once I spotted them on vimeo. They are great :)

Can't wait to see what else gets cooked up

What no photo credit?

Sweet videos and as a bonus, I have the words of the dialog etched into my brain. If anyone thinks these are pulled off in a single take, nope :)

Lara - I've been following your videos on Vimeo in stealth mode, ever since the first one was posted! Great Job! I learned a few things even though I'm an old hand!

Yeah, I too have been taking peeks at these already, and a great job you've done on them. Even learned a few tricks I didn't know.

Excellent tutorials. I worked through 1-6 last week and then a couple days ago saw #7 was up. Very well done!! :)

Yeah like others I've already watched the first few on Deborahs Vimeo account but must say they've been a really great help especially as we've just moved up from TGE to TGEA and are learning about it's new features.

Thanks very much for creating them I'm sure they'll be a big help to others as they have been for me... need to watch the latest few now as haven't seen them yet :)

I've watched all but the last one. Awesome work.
My only critique is the first one runs a little too fast. Things like:
What format do you save it in? is missing. (my map is square without the "ocean" part even tho it shows up on my heightmap.)
You have done great tho. Give yourself a great big pat on the back. :-)
These types of tutorials are desperately needed for newcommers.

These are fantastic video tutorials. Well done on your hard work.

And it's not just newcomers who can benefit.

I finally know how to pronounce fresnalbias and what it means! Same goes for iterations in ShapeReplicator which I'd misunderstood the meaning of.

An idiot-proof tutorial for using GroundCover would be nice.

Saw these last week. They were pretty decent. More videos like this on the default features of TGEA would be great. Perhaps a good heightmap tutorial (for standard terrain) and a tutorial on creating detailed terrain textures as well. ;)

X_X I just noticed they are for TGEA only. :/
How about we get some for TGE aswell?
The Engine got release so long ago and we never got any. -.-

Antonios, these video tutorials don't contain anything that is specific to either TGE or TGEA if I recall correctly. The process she goes through is the same on both engines.

My mistake on the heightmap thing. What was I thinking...

Must be because I had so much trouble getting my own heightmap to work the other night. Weird tiling and stuff going on.

Neat.

I think a (wheeled)vehicle tutorial explaining the parameters would be useful too.
