SoW - A Quick Update

by Gareth Fouche · 01/15/2009 (11:54 am) · 11 comments

The new GG site reminded me of just how long it's been since I posted here. Too long.

Scars of War development continues, sometimes slowly, but it continues. For anyone interested, I've done some updates to the website, so head over if you want to learn more about SoW, the story, setting and RPG mechanics. I also have a developer blog which I update more frequently than here. Mostly, I update it more frequently because I can pad it with silly rants, industry analysis and standard blog rubbish. ;)

I suppose this blog needs screenshots. I'll start with some of the gui stuff I've been working on for character creation, still a work in progress, obviously. You'll notice it matches the website theme. No coincidence there ;) Most of my work recently has been with the underlying RPG systems, so the gui/number changes are the most obvious sign of those changes. I did an almost complete overhaul of the character system, it's now in a 90% complete state. As opposed to last time, when I thought I was 90% complete, but wasn't even close. This time is FOR REALS, really! Heh.

Yes, as you can see, lots of lovely numbers to crunch. I love numbers.

Maybe I should remind people what SoW looks like, I can't find my blog history list. With the added lovely of the SSAO mod from Ubiq :

I was just thinking about SOW the other day actually, and it's looking good! I too like those GUIs. Some entertaining reading on your developer blog by the way, I had to bookmark that.

Coolness! I really like what you're doing with the character background options and the way they affect attributes and skills.

But, regarding the look of the UI, I'd prefer something that looks like it's been written down (or engraved...?) -- like on parchment or scrolls or tablets or... something. Dunno, it just seems a bit strange to me, I think mostly because there's nothing behind the text -- it's just a void back there. Maybe a subtle stone texture background would help. Good layout though! =)

Thanks for the comments all. :)

Kevin : Yeah, a subtle texture background could work, I'll experiment. I also want to try out some custom fonts, think I need to shop around the net a bit.

Really great job Gareth! I wish I would be this far ahead with my gui. :) I better get back to working on the game tomorrow instead of hanging around reading blog posts and cooling temperature around here. It's time for me to publish another blog about Xenocell.

"It's time for me to publish another blog about Xenocell."

Good stuff, I'll keep an eye out for that. :)

Is the temperature high here? I can't tell, Durban weather is swelteringly hot right now, it seems positively frosty in comparison, heh. ;)

Everyone is so worked up about the website. Me, I'm waiting to see what is announced next for T3D. GG has to feel that the new stuff is worth the price increase, so I'm really curious to see what they have up their sleeves. I want new dev toys! :)

A great site for fonts, including thousands of fonts free for commercial use, is www.dafont.com. The site is very well organized and you can filter your search by license type as well. You can also type sample text and see how it will appear for every font in your search result.

Wow it's looking really great Gareth, agree with you on the numbers think I get as much fun out of working on classes, stats calculating the best combinations as I do from playing games :)

Perhaps it's the geek in us all.
