Servers with Radioactive Core (WIP)

by Jules · 12/31/2008 (4:50 am) · 9 comments

Today I started to work on a low-poly server rack, and a computer system the other day to see if I could come up with a series of office props, taking them a step further into the future by powering them with a radioactive core. In the real world this would be quite dangerous, with your average server engineer requiring to wear some heavy duty gloves in case it leaked. So who knows, bringing power to performance may be the way forward in the future, with glowing server engineers.

Server rack, glass frontage - radioactive power core. (Edit: just added, side doors!)

Normally I'm not a very good blogger, but I'm going to at least come up with one blog every 1-2 weeks with a progress update on what I'm working on. Last month of the year (4 entries!).

By the next update the office props should be finished. I'm looking at creating a desk, chair, water cooler, bin, and maybe to finish it off with a server room for the server racks.

Looks great. The only thing that bothers me is the stretched logo on the glass door (assuming the logo that represents the fan in the top of the cabinet is it's original shape).

If you don't want to have to change the texture file, you could always break the door up into 3 brushes, with the middle piece containing a brush that is proportional to the logo texture.

Update - almost done, just more servers with front textures and blanking plates to add, maybe a cooling system on the top with fans. edit: plus sort out the glass as per Brians suggestion. What do you think?

@Brian - thanks, you're right on the stretched image. Texturing is not my strong point so your advice to break it up will help with the next update.

If you are wanting to take that server into the future, you have too many fans. Liquid cool that thing with some bright RED UV fluid:)

Looks good...

@Randy - cheers. Maybe I will do that for the next server rack :) They are obviously in the process of upgrading! lol.

(update) gave it a sticker on glass looking effect. No stretched image now.

TGEA - in game shot - Bet you didn't know Kork was a part-time server engineer, although with that radioactive core, he'll not need a power supply :) - that'll be handy in the stronghold mission!

Ok, I'm now done with the servers, backplanes and racks. Now to move onto a server room within a data centre building. I may release this lot as a pack if there is demand for it.
