Journal Land Pick of the Week
DruinkJournal - Evil Steve follows in the footsteps of Mike.Popoloski and ApochPiQ by starting his own series of articles in his journal, revolving around Direct3D. This first tutorial covers proper technique for setting up D3D, initializing and creating a window with a simple screen fill.
From the Staff
* Gaiiden's Scroll - last weekly sitrep of the year with a first look at the cover for the new GDNet book series, updates to the About Us page, updates to the GDNet Facebook page, updates to the publishing schedule, and new resources and events
Project Updates
* Chronicles of the Hieroglyph - Jason Z teases an upcoming release that's worth keeping an eye out for (I'll second that), and looks ahead for next year
* Untitled - Tape_Worm releases another update to Gorgon, pushing the version to 1.1.3266.898. That's for real, right?
* Gauntlets of Recursion (+3) - HopeDagger updates on Skirmish with a new weapon item, the Shrapnel Claymore. Now we just need pics of players getting ripped to shreds
* iLiNX - urs shares two more purty screens from his iLiNX game engine, video hopefully soon
* Merry Prankster Games - gdunbar continues the breakdown of his SENG Game Engine, looking at the RPG Engine that will drive the actual gameplay
* Oddgames development journal - O-san quickly details progress made on blending to enable transparent objects to be placed atop each other properly, as well as a more efficient picking routine, both for his Nimrod isometric editor
* The Pixel Ocean - PixelOcean updates on the progress of his Essentia Engine and asks for advice in regards to further development
* Ye Olde Ramblings - Telastyn starts working out units of measurement for his language Tangent
* Rated N For Nerd - nerd_boy returns after 2 months with an update on his lite weight code editor control for .NET dubbed rnfnCodeLite, plus a little app taht lets you change file timestamp properties
* Memoirs of a Graphics Engine - jochenstier talks about networking issues in his engine while keeping things interesting with some visuals - very nice. A big glob of text is never easy on the eyes :)
* Journal of Programmer16 - Programmer16 has completely refactored his code and while it is NGDR (not game development related), he does comment on some of Stardock's offerings, like Impulse and ObjectDock. Seeing as Stardock also makes games (and employs Mittens) it's worth a mention
* Saga City - sneakyrobot begins the in-depth analyzation of his engine, starting with the SDL-based framework and the sub-systems it runs.
Game Dev Stuffs
* Any Colour You Like - benryves had to learn Silverlight, and in doing so took Cogwheel, a Sega 8-bit system emulator, and turned it into a Silverlight app for playing in your browser. He also tells you how to do it.
* Trapper Zoid's Trapper Keeper - Trapper Zoid returns to his language discussion from last week, specifically C# and three reasons why he's decided not to bother with it, yet
* . . - Daerax thinks that the recession is good news for start up indies (and start ups in general), and lists 5 reasons why. He also lists a bunch of software development quotes from the 60's/70's that remain surprisingly relevant
* Graham's Incessant Ramblings - gwihlidal swings by to announce that the companion site for his book Game Engine Toolset Development is back online, and is soliciting ideas for another book.
Other Stuffs
* Blue stain - alfith drops the news that he will be a father next year, so swing by and leave some congrats (or warnings, haha)
Greetings and salutations to our newest Journal Land citizen mikeman, and a warm welcome back to okonomiyaki, who took an almost three year hiatus.
