Happy Thoughts On Being Alive!

Well, this is the time of year where everyone gets all sappy and sentimental about friends and family and goodwill toward everyone and peace on earth... but I have a special reason to be all gooey and cheesey and full of love toward everyone this joyous holiday season:

Sorry for the low resolution, it's a cell phone shot, but to make a long story short, a couple of nights ago, I decided to take advantage of the amazing abilities automobiles give us to travel WAY faster than we normally would or should, especially in icy conditions.

I was on my way back from a very productive dev session with my friends and colleagues at BrokeAss Games down in Northern California. The whole way back was surprisingly uneventful, and I suppose I got a little cocky and impatient to be home... until I got to just a few miles away, coming up on Cottage Grove, and suddenly I was spinning around and flying off the freeway at 60 mph, backwards.
It's hard to tell from the pictures, but my car is at least twenty feet off the road, having passed within a couple of feet of a tree that would have made a big difference to my day. (I am a treehugger, but I normally try not to hug them with my car.)
However, amazingly enough and despite my best efforts to the contrary, not only did I survive without so much as a scratch, but so did my car.

All I have to show for it is some mud and grass stuck to the back left quarter panel, a $250 bill from the towing company, and the memories.
So, needless to say, I'm celebrating every day with a little extra enthusiasm this year! I've got several projects in the works that I'm going to be blogging about shortly, but for now, I'm just happy to be here! Enjoy the holidays, everyone, and wherever you're going, if the traction looks a little weird, please SLOW THE HELL DOWN!
Peace,
Chris

And if you are wondering how I could do that on a dry road. Think TransAm, 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. Yea. An accident like that can put your priorities in place pretty quick:)

Having made a similar oops on a dry road a few years ago, I know how you feel and glad to hear you are safe... Stay safe..And if you are wondering how I could do that on a dry road. Think TransAm, 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. Yea. An accident like that can put your priorities in place pretty quick:)

How realistic would you say the vehicle physics were, while you were spiraling out of control?
:D Take care, Chris!

Here I was thinking ragdoll physics jokes were inappropriate.
Inappropriate, but FUNNY!
Glad you're ok Chris!

But fortunately, no ragdolling was necessary. :-)
And yeah, stayin safe! I drive SLOW now. Everybody else, let this be a lesson to you! Thanks for the good wishes!

In answer to your question, the physics were completely unrealistic. I mean, there was, like, no friction at all. Could never happen. 'Shopped. But fortunately, no ragdolling was necessary. :-)
And yeah, stayin safe! I drive SLOW now. Everybody else, let this be a lesson to you! Thanks for the good wishes!

Very glad to hear you are alright, and it's a good reminder for me since I'm driving to Portland this weekend and might encounter slick roads.

And is that a "for sale" sign on the window?
If so, how much?

$250 towing bill? Man that is highway robbery! Here in Texas, there are so many pickup trucks with a wench on the front, they be fighting over which one of them got the pleasure of pulling you out.

Wow, you were lucky. Did you get buried in snow today? Congrats on saving the car.

Hehe, thanks, y'all! Yeah, they make pretty good money for fifteen minutes with a winch. But hey, it's their big time of year, ice storms are like Christmas for tow companies! One thing I can say, it was the happiest $250 I ever spent. =-)

@Chris: I'm glad you are ok! I too wanted to say that you did a pretty good job saving the car, despite the circumstances. And I do know what it feels like to have no friction at all, and then to drive slow for a long time. :) Take care!

@Benjamin: Yes, I'm actually convinced that this accident was secretly caused by the CIA. I just haven't figured out how they did it yet.

@Konrad: Ha ha, yeah I picked a pretty good parking spot, nice, soft and out of the way. @Benjamin: Yes, I'm actually convinced that this accident was secretly caused by the CIA. I just haven't figured out how they did it yet.

We drove home from Christmas through some blowing snow. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzln6Z03990 And kind of like what happened to you, AFTER we got through the really scarry part, we slid off the road into a snowbank. Everyone AND our vehicle were all safe and sound. Just really shook up.
Blessings to you!

Stastically, most vehicle accidents happen within 3 miles of home - familiarity with the area causing people to drop their guard.
Have a relaxing Christmas!
