I'm currently reviewing Torque terrain and terrain engines in general. I'd like to use this as a staging area for the info that I find.
I'm specifically interested in TorqueX terrain which curently uses Version 3 of the Torque .ter file format. It's functional and would probably be "enough" to fill my needs for now, but goign forawrd I don't think I can expect to build much of a 3D world without at least adding paging.
So that begs the question, if I'm going to put the work in to create a paging system why would I not also add the functionality to move the terrain engine up to using Version 4 files so it would be compatible with TGEA terrain.
Here's a link to the forum post I've been discussing the XTerrain engine a little:

Update: Due to the lack of updates to TX and a lack of communications on what's going on with it, I have discontinued work with it.
