Combat Starter Kit new Update

by Brad Kelley · 12/08/2008 (8:08 pm) · 18 comments

We have just released the Combat Starter Kit v1.02. This update contains more source art and several fixes related to area impulse lockups. It is now available for download in the Garage Games store (Developer Tools).

While many people have been waiting patiently for this source art update we have even more exciting news. The next update scheduled for later this month will include several new features including a harrier jump jet and a mobile missle launcher. The Blackhawk helicopters will get a facelift as will many other models in the Combat Starter Kit. Our goal is to polish up the game art to make it even easier for developers to create their games.

Watch for the next update.

Cool looking jets. Did you happen to fix the vehicle collision stuff? In the previous version impulses were disabled for vehicles. Would love to be able to slam some jeeps around without lock ups.

Keep up the good work, it's always interesting to see what you guys are up to.

Looks cool... do you have a demo I can try out?
I'd like to take a look, before I splash the cash :)

Also.. the link to a video on the product page, isn't working :(

Thanks

Excellent news about the update and the upcoming update, the jump jet and mobile missile launcher definitely got my attention. Updated art and even more importantly the source art further renews the value of the kit - thank you!

Haven't tried the new impulse fixes yet but look forward to it. Had my own solution that fixed most of the lockups for me and it is great fun knocking vehicles around.

EDIT: there are no impulse fixes!

Well I guess I may as well stop working on my harrier pack then :(

andy.. i thought you were like half way done with your game.. harrier pack...

The harrier pack was a by-product of BRAVE. BRAVE is not longer but the asset remains. Ahh well - you snooze you lose :)

This only includes 2 more source art pieces - the avatar and the helicopter. Will the weapons be addressed in the next update?

Code fixes - a simple fix for the vehicle gauge in guiVehicleGaugeCtrl.cc was the only change from 1.01 to be found. So, uh, where are these fixes at?

Could we get a clarification on the licensing rights to the art included with the kit? At one time it was said we're free to use the art in any way. However some of the art can also be found included with several resources found here - which may not be much of a problem; but, and this is a big one, there might be an issue with the chaingun files: the sounds included with the CSK are the exact same sounds that are contained within the Helicopter Resource which clearly states "The sounds contained within ARE NOT free for commercial use."

If you want those weapons I will be happy to include them. At east they do work. As for the helicopter: The sounds for both the helicopter and the chainguns are fine to use. I bought royalty free sounds with the appropirate licenses for distrubution. As for the models: I made the Chain-gun the Harrier and the Helicopter myself. There are absolutly NO license issues with this kit.

The area impulses are not turned on yet but the math fixes have been added to the build.

In which file(s) are the math fixes added? According to winMerge and Beyond Compare only the one guiVehicleGaugeCtrl.cc file is different between 1.01 and 1.02 in the source and in the scripts. Could we get those fixes in the CSK forums?

I was not questioning who made what, I only wanted clarification about the art because many of the textures I have seen before.

I'm willing to take your word that you bought new sounds for distribution but it is confusing because all 10 sounds in the kit @ "~/data/shapes/chaingun/audio/..." are the exact same sounds that are part of the helicopter resource which says they can't be used - that's really the only questionable license matter to me. Anyone who has played Tribes 2 will also recognize some of those sounds: (blaster_impact, chaingun_activate, chaingun_impact, chaingun_off, chaingun_projectile. The only difference between those 5 particular sounds from Tribes 2 is a format change from .wav to .ogg. -- I just now listened to them ;)

This doesn't sound right Mike (in a few ways), and we will check to verify the correct build was prepared.

I just tried to buy the Combat Starter Kit and was barred from purchasing it because I didn't own TGE 1.5 (I own TGEA). I never ran into this before. Is there anyone at GG I can contact? I really want this starter kit for my game project...

Thanks

DO NOT BUY THIS PACK, UNLESS YOU WANT YOUR MONEY TAKEN FROM YOU ONLY TO NEVER SEE SUPPORT.

MORE LOUD NOISES! A new build with art has been uploaded to me by the dev team to look at this very afternoon. I will review it tomorrow and get the art sources to GG ASAP. If there are code changes it will take longer to review through GG's normal processes.

@Jason - so what's the issue? Do they not return your email? I'd be interested to see what the issue is with support. I'm sure it's probably just email gone missing.

Well, to be honest, the pack is not great, but it is ok, I was just pissed off when I wrote that, lots of things going through my mind and I do retract that statement.

You can see my honest review of it here
