Blockland Physics

You can watch it in High-def on YouTube here.
One of my little side projects finally sees the light of day. Eric Hartman has announced a new feature for Blockland - shown in the video above. Client-side brick physics powered by Bullet, with one way interactions between players/vehicles/explosions and bricks.
Doing this was tricky because Blockland levels are largely user built and can contain up to hundreds of thousands of bricks. Most broadphase solvers puke past 2**16 objects. Read about the technical details a on my blog.
In the realm of PushButton Labs, things are going well. Your PBL Fortune Cookie reads: Keep an eye out for cool announcements.
Oh - and if I don't post again before then - Merry Christmas, everybody!

Seriously though, I had no idea...
EDIT: Give it some time and LEGO will offer you millions if not billions for this, DON'T DO IT!!!

How many years am I behind that I have never heard of any physics engine being fully, or at least to a playable/usable point being integrated in Torque!? I mean, holy crap this is AMAZING I always wanted physics in Torque and never thought it'd be possible but this is just proof packed in to an FLV file!Seriously though, I had no idea...

But it's a good niche.

@Kevin: doubtful, turns out the first thing people build when you let them build anything in a multiplayer setting are giant penises. If I was LEGO, I'd be wary of it since it would be nearly impossible to make it "kid safe." For instance, in their MMO they are probably not going to allow free-form building for just this reason. But it's a good niche.

Haven't heard of anything like that from Little Big Planet yet though?
12/06/2008 (5:56 pm)
Yeah, they did that with Spore, it did die down after a while though (I think, I don't tend to go around searching google for this kinda stuff ya' know :-D) afterall, theres only so many penis-aliens you can make in any one game right?Haven't heard of anything like that from Little Big Planet yet though?

I'm certain that someone, somewhere, is making representations of genitalia in LBP.

The only heat I've heard on LBP is the song that got removed because it quotes a passages from the quran! uk.gamespot.com/news/6199562.html. Then again, perhaps that statement only proves the point even more of the risks of free-creativity games... :S

lol, yeah, I am too, I just meant I haven't heard of it in any of the gazillion game dev/news feeds I'm subscribed too (unless I've totally missed it), which makes me wonder (if right) how they've prevented the publicity of something that is such an inevitability? I mean it didn't even take 2 days before it happened to spore in spades. The only heat I've heard on LBP is the song that got removed because it quotes a passages from the quran! uk.gamespot.com/news/6199562.html. I think the risk is in people not being clear on what's "user created" and what's not. If I print out a racist pamphlet on my printer at home, they don't go after Canon when someone is offended. There should be a way to do a game that works the same way.

Isn't it possible to just add a disclaimer in the EULA / terms & conditions (although, of course, this doesn't stop people blaming the developer), but it covers you legally.
Funny enough, similar thing has happened in animal crossing, with someone sending out media versions of the game where the character (a sheep) has been taught to end every sentence with the word ni**a. Of course, the difference with this story is that it was user-generated contented included in Nintendo's media copies (at least that's what they say). uk.gamespot.com/news/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=26696329

So true! Just like you can't sue adobe for indesign or dreamweaver should people use it to make pamphlet in question. I guessed entertainment is treated differently in that respect. Especially games where I still hear people say they get weird looks like as if they said porn when they reveal they make games. The image / stigma / youth of the medium so to speak.Isn't it possible to just add a disclaimer in the EULA / terms & conditions (although, of course, this doesn't stop people blaming the developer), but it covers you legally.
