Modular Castles...screenshots

I've been doing alot of research lately on Historically accurate castle layouts, and it's not easy to find a whole lot on the net ...at least with any decent sort of layout....

So I went to my local bookstore....huge place...figured they would have something...you know on architecture at least...all they could do was order something...

so I took a little trip through amazon, and found tons of stuff......bought probably 8 books all that seemed to have good info for less than $50.....

well now I also decided to brush up on my constructor skills, and between that and Maya and milkshape
I'm starting to come up with some good stuff.....

here are just a few of the prelim pics.... most of the textures are just temp,
but I thought there might also be some use for modular castles, and maybe compounds.... I'm working on getting at least 1 new piece done each day...figure maybe within a month or two I should have a pretty good collection.....than go through and make a few different texture packs for everything, and have several hundred different possibilities......
so far got most of a proper gatehouse....2 full stories with guard rooms, and a proper deadly entrance...
and a three story stair tower with circular stair and ramparts....

still have a lot of work to add the roof riggings and other machianations but the basics are there

one of the hardest parts so far is making sure each new piece will interchangeably connect with the others

Hi Ken,

here you find an interesting tool for building historical textures. There are also free textures for castles and old buildings.

Good luck

For reference material, I'd start with a list of castles and systemically search google images for as many pics possible. This doesn't really help with layout, but it should give you plenty of reference for components.

You may consider a series of connectors. Basically, allowing for only certain pieces to complement each other, allowing for variation between connections. The last thing you probably want in making modular concepts like this is for the player to be able to visually recognize the modules because the same brush exists at every corridor.

Another option is transition connectors that will connect each module connector. So say each of your modules uses any number of 5 different portals, you could have modules that allow you to connect each portal type. These modules could be a simple doorway all the way up to a hallway.

Another fun component of modular design is building the procedural processes that put them all together.
