Gladiator Wars

by Derik Wilson · 08/04/2008 (8:40 pm) · 4 comments

I will be graduating from college after earning my Bachelor of Science in Game Software Development this November, and I am currently trying to get a team of volunteers together to create a gladiator style combat game called "Gladiator Wars". The setting will be the Colosseum and it will include all known gladiator combat styles and weapons (yes that is a lot of animation).

One of the main planned features is to build on a multiplayer society where players can group up, travel through Rome to look around and purchase/sell/repair equipment, train, and just socialize while waiting to enter their choice of a free-for-all, tournament, man-vs-beast, or team-vs-team fight for fame and fortune. There is a possibility of a instanced based questing system to give the players something to do while not in an arena fight.

All stats will be tracked and posted on a global master server.

The game is still in the initial design phase so I thought I would start looking for 3D Artists, texture artists, sound engineers, Torque Scripters, AI Programmers, and Physics gurus.

The primary goals of this game is to learn, add something to your portfolio, and create a fun gladiator style combat game with strong community aspects.

We will be making use of TGE 1.5.x or TGEA, Houdini 9, 3D World Studio or something like it, and Overlord for project management.

I'll post more as the project unfolds.

You can also join me in IRC at host: "pcgamedev.selfip.net:16667". The room is "#RomanGladiators". If I am not there, or I am AFK, just come back or hang out, I will be there soon!

Sounds pretty cool. And could have a good amount of people wanting to play such a type of game.

I do worry a bit that the large amount of different combat, foot, horseback and chariots etc may keep the game back a bit and I would suggest aiming for foot combat first and get that down before getting in to more complex horse and chariots etc. For horse combat i recommend looking at Mount and Blade for ideas as how I think the best way to do that is.

I too was concerned with adding to the plethora of combat games that currently saturate the market. The primary purpose of the project is to get something in my team's portfolio (for me it will be the first item in my portfolio beside various school projects). The secondary purpose is to learn more about game development using Torque and the other tools associated (Houdini, etc.). I also plan on using this as a platform for some AI research where 3D combat strategy is involved.

If it gets notice, then that is great! If not, we will hopefully have another fun combat game to add to the indie market and we will have learned quite a bit about the various aspects and disciplines of the game development industry. A huge focus will be on maintaining the integrity of the historical content. It has to be accurate. That should not be a problem as there are many resources out there on Roman history. Right now I am studying "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" by Gibbons, and "The Complete Works of Tacitus" translated by Alfred John Church and William Jackson Brodribb.

This project has been put on hold due to inactivity. I have now graduated Westwood and a team from college and I are continuing our work on a Space Flight Multiplayer Shooter/Race game. If anyone would like to know more, email me at dwilson@digitalkingdomgames.com.
