Plastic Gem # 13 : Kirk Alberts' Urban Decay 3 of 5

Kirk Alberts again from Plastic Games. Time for yet another example buliding using the texture pack described in Gem #11. You can blame Paul Dana for stretching this free texture pack into five gems. He was all for giving away free stuff but I guess 372 textures in one gem intimidated him. He probably felt it made his little code gems look small. Poor guy.

Anyway he wanted me to talk more about the textures, but there isn't much to say. Most of the textures in this pack are created from preexisting digital images. I don't have the patience to create all my textures from scratch. If I can't find what I want I'll Photoshop something up but most of the time I'll use a digital photo or some other image to start with and go from there.

There are great sites out there where you can gather images to use for textures, skins or reference for other projects.

The best online texture collection available online that I've found is:

cgtextures.com

A few other places I've found some great images:

accustudio
imageafter
stockexchange

The guy at spectralogue has some good textures, as well as this little tool called Texturedesk This application lets you load your texture and see it on a 3d plane in a number of different views and lighting situations to see how it might tile in-game.

Feel free to share any sites you've found out there. You can never have enough resource material. I keep a folder on my desktop that is loaded with anything I see that I like and even remotely think I might use some day. It's got pieces of dirt, rocks, signs, rusty old cars, an old toilet seat. You name it.

Also, it's always fun to grab your digital camera and hit the streets and get your own textures and reference photos. Give yourself a chance to get the hell away from your computer for a change.

This Gem's Sample Interior

In the .zip file for this gem I have included a sample interior you can play with called urbanDecay03.dif. Put this file in the urbanDecay folder you created in Gem #11 and then place in the mission editor.

This interior is just a sample to show how the texture set can be used. It does not have LOD or portals setup.

The Next Gem

The next gem will provide yet another example interior!
