In my last blog, I outlined my new venture www.cardcapers.co.uk. I promised I would come back on here to chart my highs and lows, so that other budding game developers can hopefully skip my mistakes, and indeed make a sucess out of this.
So in the first of many, I am going to share my experiances, and advice on a better way to go about things. It is my intention to open debate for people to take there talent to the next level, and actually make a go of game development.
One man cant stop a river, many men can build a dam.
Although there seems to be a real 'lone wolf' mentality, belive me its a lonely road to nowhere. Find a team, and develop your own skills to the project at hand. However be aware, not any team will do. For many reasons, people cant work with anyone. When entering into a team, before you start to develop ideas, project plans, and actually start the development cycle, it is very important to make sure the chemestry within the team is right and works. A good team chemistry wise is far better at the support side of things to develop team members skills. Dont underestimate this. If the shit hits the fan, in a good team you will seek help from team members, to get issues solved to move on to the next task. If you are in a poor team, you will just get frustrated, to the point where you will walk away, finad another team, and start the whole process again, after 4 years, you will one dat take stock of the situation, and realise your teenage years were robbed from you, the social life your peers enjoy is something you don't have the luxary of enjoying, and generally you will feel short changed.
So to recap:
1)Work in a team
2)Make sure the team is 'right for you'
3)Dont get too consumed.
4)Never be afraid to seek support from others.
5)Be good at what you do, specialise, dont try to master too much too soon.
My next blog will introduce time management, and the art of over avoiding over commiting yourself.
