An enemy becomes a friend...

I have been critical of Blender in the past. I thought the interface was horrible and an utter waste of effort to learn. I've been thinking recently about what it would take to succeed as an indie game dev. I came to the conclusion that my soon to be wife will not let me spend a lot of our cash on tools that may never bring any financial return. Will browsing the local Borders I noticed the new "Introducing Character Animation with Blender" book recently published by Sybex. I decided well, Blender is free and there are many people who find Blender to be a very capable app. I picked up a copy.
I must say, that my bias against Blender has vanished. I am working extremely fast in blender and am finding it a very capable modeler. I haven't got into the animation chapters yet but I promise some screens in the next couple of weeks. If you have been against Blender in the past, try this book. There is no comparison between this and the online tutorials. Highly recommended. Who knows what the future may hold...

Blender is REALLY capable (mostly when you look in the gallery archives they have). I have not figured out the interface for the life of me however, so I use Milkshape instead. But I'm having other thoughts because I'd like to try and get into making high polygon models, I may have to try that book out.

Glad to have you in the Blender club! It would be cool if you could share some do's and don'ts in the Blender forums, to ease the newcomers and to learn from experience of others. I'm a beginner also concerning Blender-Torque, and I plan to do the same thing.

Blender is great tool. My only grievance is the DTS exporter. I have no problem with shapes, just with animations. I'll have to take a look at the book.

The exporter does not have any known issues with animation export. If you'd post in the Blender forums I'd be glad to help out with any problems you might be having. If you've found a bug we're unaware of we'd like to get it fixed. An example model that displays the problem would be helpful, if you could email me one at the address in my profile.
