Trees, lot of trees. (phase terminal ?)

by Claude-Alain Fournier · 03/04/2007 (3:58 am) · 14 comments

No pics this time. I did not have time to work on this ressource for a little while.

For the ones who are following the development of this ressource be aware that I am stalling the development till I know better about Sickhead Games development on the forest pack, see this plan if you missed it www.garagegames.com/blogs/11919/12467

I am happy to see somebody work on this and I would be more than happy to buy such pack. Remember that I started working on this ressource only because I though forest pack was dead or at the bottom of someone todo list. So now that I know it maybe comming soon (hope hope...) I can dedicate my time to something else.

I may decide to release my work as a ressource, as it is or after I find the time to implement the server side collision. I feel that such ressource may be usefull not only for tree but for all sort of environment items, example rock, log, mushroom, whatever, it can be used with any static shape

I'd still really like to see this, completed or not. Even if we are getting the forest pack finally, I'm pretty sure it won't solve everything. Even if I had the cash for SpeedTree, I would most likely still use a spot of replicator here and there. Sometimes the best visual solution is a combination of code solutions.

Aw man, don't stop:) I really like what you've done so far. Looks like you've whipped a lot of the problems already.

Well, this is something that I was always keeping an eye on. If you really had to stop working on it, I'm pretty sure many people would like to see your work as a resource.

Great work !

Don't worry this will be released as a ressource in a form or another. But about continuing development, that all depend on the comming pack, does it solve my problems ? if yes I see no point continuing, our project has a lot of other things to be solved.

depends on what your goals are,
but do count the experierce you gain by making it by your own
also what erik said, when you buy the forest pack, you might see things you did better so you could replace them with your own code
also, i dont know how much the forest pack will cost, but if you make it your own, there is no prize tag except for the time you spent on it

Oh noooooo!

With their forest pack hitting us around 2020 ;) I really thought this would slip past the gate and hit the dev community.

You really should not stop, but finish it as it have looked really good so far. Might even be the other way around, that 'they' could peak at your work and construct something cool too ;)

Keep it up -Can I donate ;)

@Florian

I know experience is always good to take. But as of cost, I don't do that for fun (well kinda) but for a funded project so time is money ;) and cost of forest pack is of no impact, it will always cost less than me spending days on this ressource.

But I will spend sometimes on the ressource on my own time, if any....

There was a semi-official statement made in the TGEA forums that Sickhead will try to release it in May.

Are you going to continue though? What are your plans with this now?

Well as I said, I am waiting for the pack to be released to decide.

However I estimate that my code if not too bad and with little to no change could be used to draw other thing than trees, grass, flowers, stones, and what not.

I did play a little at Lord of the Ring Online, I am not too surprised that they actually use same technic I used. But I think that my version is more accurate, that mean that when they move from 2d to 3d tree does not spawn at same place. But overall it's the same feeling than with my code.

I am off for some holiday and I was busy doing other things anyway. I will decide in July if I continue or simply release the code as it is as a ressource.

New on this.

I am back from my holiday but my main job keep me busy so I could not do anything yet. I have send the code a couples of weeks earlier to my Adellion collegue David Dougher, so with luck he may be able to release this as a ressource, I have given him the go.

Today I am working on the collision part of the code and see if I can get around to add server side collision for trees that are NOT existing on the server. A bit of a tricky one.

That is awesome news, Claude-Alain.

Even without the collision this can still work for a Flight Sim.
But good luck with that collisions ;)

Hey Claude-Alain, great news. Will be interesting to see how this works, and trying to tweak it in. The vids Ive seen sure made an impression of the vastness of the forests.

Here is a little bit of publicity for Sickhead incomming forest pack :

They seems close to release, that's a good news. I have my credit card ready for when they do it. Then I will post my ressource as it is without server side collision, the ressource will still be good for placing small bush and plants that does not require collision detection.
