F@#$head Racer progress

by Vincent D · 02/12/2007 (5:19 pm) · 25 comments

Lately ive been working some on Fuckhead racer, the project i talked about a bit in my last blog. And a few things are already falling together, like the inventory system with slots. Ive done this kind of inventory system before and it really isn't a big deal to change the standard inventory system to a slot kind system. But this time i had to change it so that it gets the inventory of the car for the gunner and the driver and create a "temporary slot". When the car picks up a weapon or powerup it will first be in the temporary slot. Then the driver or gunner can deside to put it in a normal slot or discard it. Until they decide to discard it or keep it the car wont be able to pickup any other weapons/powerups. If they choose to keep it and all slots are full another weapon/powerup will be discarded.
I also finished the target selecting another way as planned but still good enough for now. The first plan was to right click on an enemy vehicle and then set that as the target. But i couldn't make the raycast not collide with the gunners own driver or vehicle... so i changed plan and made a function that switches between all the enemy cars to lock on. Not as good as the first plan but as i already said good enough.
Ive come up with an idea to make the gameplay a bit more interesting for the gunner. Put some "targets" around the track and if gunners hit it with a certain gun they will receive a powerup, weapon or ammo.
Further ive fixed some bugs, added alot of smaller things and cleaned up some code.

So some things are pretty much done while other still need some more work. Also alot of "smaller" things still need to be done like adding all powerups and weapons. Im only talking about code now. Most artwork isn't ready yet or even started working on (not that it's that much). Thats pretty much it... till next blog.

It's a neat looking character, the name does nothing for me though. I think the "shock value" of the name actually hurts the overall product in this case, I'm sure you would of seen a different reaction to the materials presented without it.

I fail to see how the character explains the name. I agree with Tim, I think the name hurts more than helps (honestly I almost ignored your blog entirely). To each his own I guess.

Anyway, looks like you've got some good stuff going there.

There is a very fine line in the use of profanity for the sake of humor.

I love racing combat games. But the name...not so much.

hmmm... time for a name change then i guess. Its just that i dont really care about language maybe a bit unprofessional but still. And the name for this character is because when i created it, when i was bored i draw his head and we called it fuckhead because.... well admit his head is pretty fucked :-P and we kept calling him fuckhead. We could'nt really think of another name for the game. New name suggestions are welcome :-)

for the character model, credit goes to florian a.k.a masterF

Don't think of it as for just our sake, but for your own. Simply because if you decide to sell it, you have to put yourself in the buyer's shoes. "Hey mom! Could I get Marble Blast? Or I could get umm... er... that game over there with the funny name!"

Don't change the name.

personally, I think Bighead Racer is not only more appropriate but its funnier.

also, don't change the name just because a few twirps feel offended. thats the joy of being an indie, we can do and say whatever the hell we want in a game. fuck commericalism.

Well..I think the name of the character "fuckhead" also defines on how the game's atmossphere will be
First the game wont be in a realistic or serieus setting but more in a sarcastic, cartoony, setting so the name fuckhead shouldn't be in any way offense but to the character itself
Quote--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
some info bout the character:
Its a Fuckhead, a ugly, stupid, dumb, expressionless character.
It really just, stupid staring in front of him :p
he walks stamping his feet ^^.
Spammer created this evil creature and if u stare long enough to it, u will go crazy
Quote--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As we "created" this creature we tried to visualize it as discribed above
and to kyle, as you the discribes the buyer as a child, the audience we were aiming for were teens mostly and adults
but the game itself is more of like a way out of this serieusness of the game buinsess and more generaly, life, and we will try to make this game as unserieus and most of all funny as posible so to think of this game so serieus will give you a totaly wrong idea about it

btw, bighead racing sounds pretty neat :)

If I am not mistaken, but most of us here would be considered teens or young adults. I believe the people here in the community of garage games represent the type of audience you are describing.

"I think the "shock value" of the name actually hurts the overall product in this case."

"I fail to see how the character explains the name."

"There is a very fine line in the use of profanity for the sake of humor."

Edit: Just a little food for thought.

Rick Noggin Racing

Main Character:
Rick Noggin - One Bad Maternal Copulator

Subtle sarcasm and borderline clean equivalents. Funny in my book. Wide open dirty words - not so funny:)
