End of Year Thanks and Pics
12/31/2006 (3:59 pm) by Graham Evans
Greetings all :)
At the end of the year, it's time to send out a Happy New Year and a thanks to everyone that has helped me get where I am, and also to do an end of year update on the game :)
Since the last Blog a few weeks ago :-
The following is now done :-
Simple pathfinding and Bot Movement using precompiled nav nodes using this resource:-
www.garagegames.com/index.php?sec=mg&mod=resource&page=view&qid=8531
A time and weather management system using this resource :-
www.garagegames.com/index.php?sec=mg&mod=resource&page=view&qid=6107
a lot of code optimisation, especially in the database area and re-organising scripts so that the normal path through them is the quickest.
A schedule system for the bots to move around the village based on time of day, day of week, weather etc etc. It makes a huge difference in bringing life to the game to have characters wandering around appearing to do things rather than just being static placeholders for quests etc :)
Addition of factions, classes and charisma settings.
Changing of colours of dots on the radar and on the GuishapenameHUD to represent those factions and friendly/enemy/other player status.
A lot of work on the zone and the environment.
BUT... none of this could have been done without the wonderful resources and the friendly advice given here in the community, and of course, without the engine and GG itself.
So to finish, some pics (a must have) and to all those that see their work and their resources in these pictures, you really do have all my thanks and appreciation for all the hard work you have provided to this community.
So, without further ado....
An overall view of the human starting village of Summerhaven at this point on a cold, rainy day :-

The Docks area :-

A ground level view in the Village :-

A view of the pathfinding NavNet the bots use to navigate around the village :-

And finally (at last I hear you say) the Graveyard.. where you will respawn on death :-

Once again, to all who have provided art, resources, code and help, and to everyone in the GG community... THANK YOU and HAPPY NEW YEAR :)
Regards

Great work. Thats really coming along.
I wood suggest trying the roofs with a blue tone rather than green. With the ground shades of green, the roofs also being green is a little overkill.

Thanks, and no source yet, theres still a long road to go, but hopefully, anything that I do that's origional and will work of straight 1.5 I will release back as a resource. Unfortunately at the moment, most of the stuff is based upon multiple resources.
@ Todd..
Thank you. The point about the roofs is well taken, I will drop in a new pick in a few minutes to compare:)
@Kefan TY :)

Is it still just you working on this, or did you land a couple other people? As soon as my company launches our TXE game late Jan, we might be in the market for an MMO to publish if you are interested. I'll hit you up later next month.

Wow.. Graham, I'm amazed and what you can accomplish knowing what skills you had when we first met (a year ago already?!) You truely are what Indie developers aspire to be. The shots look fantastic. Keep up the great work! I can't wait to play this!Is it still just you working on this, or did you land a couple other people? okay it was a quickie.. and a bit bright, but here's the blue roof special :) Again not sure.. maybe tile red? LOL I'll experiment:)

@Jonathon Thanks:) and yes, stay in touch, who knows:) Yep, still just me doing all the work, but as I said I have used a lot of content packs, and I have now got Andrew producing some custom art for me.
Ultimately, the team will have to grow, theres a long way yet, but there is some possible funding on the horizon so who knows, but till then, I get to make all the decisions and do all the work, but that's not really a problem, it's my vision I am creating and the hardest part of building the team would be ensuring the vision stays pure:)

Ya, not so bright. Think of it more along the lines of blue roof tile painted blue but now faded, rather than tiles made of blue wood.

The problem with blue is now your energy/magic pillar doesn't pop. I'd try another color... maybe something in the reds, but dark and/or desaturated. (edit: for the roofs)

Make sure you take some screens shots from the game play perspective. It can be very misleading to make design changes based on a game view the player will never see.

These resources look like some awesome stuff, is there anywhere I can download the source?
