NW Games Festival

Blogentry, stardate 6.2.06.

Well, this blog has been laying dormant for quite too long, thank you very much.
First off, I want to let you guys know about Northwest Games Festival which is happening... tomorrow! What is NW Games Festival? Here: NW Games Festival. I haven't seen any mentions of this anywhere in these here blog landscapes, so I thought I'd go ahead and give it a little push.

Why? First off, it's like a mini Indie Games Event with tons of cool stuff going on. Microsoft will be there, Garage Games will be there, Art sessions, Code sessions, and a whole lot more neat things going on. If you are around the Portland / Seattle area consider stopping by.

But the best reason to go is of course that our producer / slave driver / guy who screams at us to stop playing Oblivion is speaking at it, believe it or not. Mike has been working at Intel for years and years (8 I believe) managing parts of their cpu development, and he is helping us manage our game.
He will be speaking on "How to Organize and Manage Your Project" at 3pm, so be sure to stop by and say hi.
Unfortunatly neither me or our programmer Ryan will be able to attend due to the fact that we are a couple of hundred miles away from it and we are very poor. Well, we have some money. It's in a jar on top of the fridge...

So what has happened with our platformer / action game / shooter since we last talked?
Well.. we have a name. That's a good thing, yeah? We named our venture into indie gaming... wait for it...
Switching Gears. Tadaaaaaaa!

Oh, scr*w all of ya. ;) It's a great name.

Some of the more notable things that our programmer has managed to whip up is:
A inventory system using the fantastic flash resource available here.
A fantastic quest system which allows individual NPC's to have quests.
Hanging / moving while hanging on ledges (which took quite awhile to implement but works beatifully and is very easy to setup for me as I work on the levels.
Activate / deactivate morphing weapons
Editable (in engine) particle system (which saves particles where you leave them thank you very much).

What about on the art side? Things are coming along quite nicely, thank you very much, although the amount of work getting piled on my plate is stacking up thanks to that infernal time sucker Oblivion. Damn you Bethesda!

Now to leave you with some eyecandy (which seems to be norm around these here parts) here's the poster I created for the NW games festival. Hopefully the next update I (or mr programming man) do will contain some actual stuff from inside the game, sorry about keeping you all in suspense.

Character style reminds me a lot of Metal Arms, which was a cool overlooked console third person shooter. Is it just a poster, or you guys gonna have a demo there? I wanna see the ledge hanging implementation, wonder how similair it is to the wall running stuff I did.

Unfortunatly we will not be having a demo there. We will have a demo ready for indie games con in Eugene this year. Thanks for pointing out Metal Arms. Never heard of it before.

WRONG! The best reason to go is to play Shelled! there which will be playable in its beta1 form.

See y'all there!

Cool character design and a nice clean look. I wish you the best of luck.

Joe, I take it from your post you won't be there. I will probably mention a couple things I learned from you last October at IGDC. One was to alway ask "is it fun?" and two was to "get into prototyping and testing as soon as possible" in order to increase the number of iterations of design. Although I don't think Fredrik has spent 2 weeks perfecting a jump animation, we're trying to keep process out of the way of creativity. Rather, we work to understand the cost of creativity and then decide if we creep scope. :)
