It's been 10 years since I was a programmer and 22 years since I wrote my first computer game for my friends on an MC-10 from Radio Shack with a whopping 20KB of memory. My 34th birthday is coming up in February so I've been reevaluating my 16 year odyessey in the IT career field. Ironically I started reflecting on my career and where I want it to bo when the company I work for sent me to the Franklin Covey course, "Achieving Your Highest Priorities" in the summer and concluded I'm not doing what I started out wanting to do. My career is going well and taking off again but I am tired of the corporate world and want more time for my children (ages 2 1/2 and 9 months). My career started at 18 as a Honeywell Mainframe programmer specializing in Cobol and Fortran. Some how in 1993 my career derailed and I found myself a Unix Admin, Novell Admin, a Network Infrastructure Designer, Network Security, and NT 3.51 - 2003 server admin. Currently I am a project manager and run a IT team supporting 1000+ workstation/laptops and the network to support it. So I have no illusions to creating the "greatest game" on earth by myself in 6 months while solving world hunger. Insead I have a plan for this entire year but decided to break my plans down quarterly so I can track my progress and see tangible results. I'm also making this a public plan so that anyone can scrutinize my progress. After all, if it isn't written down, you arn't serious, and a plan not acted upon is just wishful thinking.
