Plan for Ben Garney

Hey guys,Just a quick plan from the IGC floor (more or less... sort of :P). First off -- IGC 2005 is in full swing. Just got back from it around midnight. Talking to people, playing crazy games, having a good time. I got to play almost a full course of Golf? with its creator. Very fun game. Got to try out the latest Tube Twist build. WOW. The level of quality of games compared to last year's IGC is much higher. Lots of near-complete or complete things out there. Just incredible.
I got to talk a bit on the traditional Friday night "GG Dog & Pony" show. The biggest news that I got to impart was that TDN is finally into beta for SDK owners (people who own TGE, TSE, T2D). Head on over to tdn.garagegames.com and check it out. Don't forget to read the introduction page, it'll give you a more detailed notion of where we are on this monumental, revolutionary project! Short summary - we're a lot closer to making it public than we were before. ;)
TDN pages are also going to start making their way into the Google search on the site, updated nightly of course.
Some of you have already found it on your own - testament to our fanbase and the desire for this product, I'm sure. Congrats, now you're in my database. ;)
This is going to be a cool IGC.I'd love to give a full report, go on and on, but I have a LOT of pictures and video to organize, and I also need to get some sleep, cuz I have to be at the conference hall in less than eight hours.... Crazy!
Let's just say this is going to be interesting. ;)

Notes added after reading comments - up here so everyone can see it! - follow:
Just to be clear, this is a case of "here's the container, let's start collaborating", not "all the docs are up right now." In response to those who asked, YES, absolutely start putting articles up. For now, just drop me or Adam deGrandis an e-mail if you've got an article posted, and we'll hook it into the hub pages... Don't forget to categorize it!
We'll be having interns, employees, and community members participate in official documentation projects (for instance, porting existing docs into TDN); meanwhile individuals should feel free to get involved. We'll have a page up announcing where we're doing heavy doc work so that you can be sure you're not going to get run over by a big doc dump or something. :)
(Once IGC is over) one of the most useful things you can do to help co-ordinate on TDN is get into the #tdn channel on the GG IRC server. That's where Adam and I hang out, and we also have all the changes to the site streaming into the channel via a bot. We'll also explore setting up a forum area or things like that.
I'll definitely be posting a lot more information on TDN once IGC is over; for now I'm just trying to stay on top of all the AWESOME stuff happening here!
If you do have any problems with TDN, please send me a copy of the source of the broken page, as well as the URL it happened at, and a description of what went wrong. You need a fairly recent browser or the site will look not-good. (ie, latest IE or Firefox is probably good though it should run on older browsers fine. IE5 is a known issue, some images won't work, we'll be addressing that.)
And... once again... Thanks guys, for checking this out and taking the time to use TDN! It's just going to get better from here on out - we've got at least one major surprise coming up in a week or so. (As always... when it's ready. :)
Oh yeah - multiple language support. We do support it; we'll be focusing on it once the site is a little bit more mature (and once we've identified people who can "own" each language - definitely don't want docs that are out of date!). Right now we need to get the basic structure put together, and pound out the bugs, so that we can have a solid platform for other languages to build from.

Happens every so often to me. Just log in and out to fix it for me...
I'm more interested in the "You have to own the Torque Game Engine to view this article." error, cause I really want to view that articel :P

Screenshots aren't really useful... Can you take that down and send me the source code from the page instead? Thanks!

Anyway, I think I fixed it - if the problem comes up again, PLEASE e-mail me the page source. Screenshots are basically useless to me in terms of fixing the problem.

;) Sure. Seems you did indeed fix it... Quick work!

The login issue is still there - you can bypass it by login out and then back into it, then refreshing the page. I'm using Opera 8.x

I was puzzled by something in TGE today, and I quickly found my answer, and more, via the search/TDN. I was so pleased with the content of the TDN page that I actually gave my computer a thumbs up... at which point I found it appropriate to inform you of such unexpected reflex actions.

Oh, one more thing. The double quotes in my username don't translate properly, instead showing """.

Ben, I'm using Opera 8.x as well, and I've been having less than intermittent access to TDN. Every so often I'm able to do the logout-login trick to regain access, but it's pretty unreliable on my end. From what I've seen so far, though, this is rockin'. Kudos to everyone involved. :)Oh, one more thing. The double quotes in my username don't translate properly, instead showing """.

I want the same shirt as you Ben ! with the garagegames logo on it. And great work (as always) for the tdn.

Haha, that's me! I accidently found it the other day.

2. Searching on TDN could use some work. I searched for "scriptobject" and there is only 1 hit,
yet it shows a hitlist/pagelist as well?!
Also there are a bunch of checkboxes for "namespaces" whatever those are for:
[edit: and checking off all the namespaces doesn't yeild any more hits]
3. Also there is both a "GO" and "Search" button on TDN. What's the point aren't they doing the same think- submitting the search form?
Oh well; back to searching the old garagegames.com for "scriptobject" (222 hits).

1. I am still getting unauthorized messages saying I have to own the SDK to view TDN articles. Signing out and back in always clears it up, but it's going to be a pain to always click click just to get TDN to re-authenticate me.2. Searching on TDN could use some work. Another useful thing might be (I think this is a theme thing) bad link higlighting for the TDN theme, because right now it is impossible to distinguish "empty" articles from articles that exist.
#33
As TDN is used more and more, those "empty" links become valuable repositories of knowledge.
10/09/2005 (5:25 pm)
@Jeff: That's how wiki's work and grow...the idea being that the skeletons of empty pages allow people to add information as they see fit on things that they understand while doing research of their own.As TDN is used more and more, those "empty" links become valuable repositories of knowledge.

I think what Jeff is going for is that you don't know if what you are clicking has the information one is expecting.
I'd think it would be easier for one to fill in blank articles if they knew it was blank beforehand. (At least, that is the way I think).
That is just my odd, twisted method of thinking...

"you clicked on this link so you must be an expert, or at least know something about SpecialWordsLikeThis, so go ahead and document that ...would you there, champ?"
Most articles in a typical wiki are neither empty or finished, they are somewhere in between.
10/09/2005 (9:49 pm)
The way wikis work is that people write outlines and structure with SpecialWordsLikeThis then they and others can go back later go back later and fill the content. If the wiki could talk:"you clicked on this link so you must be an expert, or at least know something about SpecialWordsLikeThis, so go ahead and document that ...would you there, champ?"

Ben when your ready to go with other languages let us know. I might be interested.

The Opera login issue is interesting. I'll have to test with it.
And the link highlighting will get taken care of, don't worry - still have the info in the pages, just no CSS assigned to it yet.
anyway, it's 3am and I'm going to bed, take care everyone! :)

We will be integrating with the google search for all TDN searching, so that search page (except for specific purposes) will go away. The Opera login issue is interesting. I'll have to test with it.

@Ben: Sleep is good, try and get some.
10/10/2005 (5:14 am)
@ Alex & Stephen: I do understand how wiki's work, I contribute pretty frequently to the python.org and wxpython wikis, what I was saying (possibly confusingly) was that unlike wikipedia where empty articles are highlighted in red (I think), the TDN wiki lacks unique empty link highlights allowing one to differentiate between articles with information and articles lacking information. I know that when I was browsing the TDN yesterday I kept clicking links going "Oooh this should be interesting!" and finding a blank article, kinda felt a little cheated that I didn't know ahead of time that it was blank, if you know what I mean.@Ben: Sleep is good, try and get some.

After saturday I could not login on TDN anymore.
I'm a TGE owner but I can't login.
Are there any issues with language of the browser(I'm from Brasil)?
The status bar of IE says to me that there an error on page.
Can someone help me?
