Community Contest #8 - Military Training Area

by David Montgomery-Blake · 03/26/2012 (5:16 pm) · 40 comments

It's that time again! We're announcing a new contest. Since some of our crew are away at Defense GameTech 2012 Conference (including Geoff who usually posts these), we decided to do a military-themed contest. We were inspired by the training/tutorial levels in Call of Duty and Frozen Synapse.

Since this is a more in-depth contest, we are allowing three weeks to put together a short military training level. Submissions due the second Friday in April 11:59 AM PDT.

Prize: $149 in first-party store credit.

Preference will be given to a playable Windows or Mac build. We do not expect it to be bug-free or have final production polish. Gameplay is the most important aspect of the contest.

Currently, we are looking at the best way to submit builds. It may be that using a free Dropbox account would be best so that we can download them and run them through a virus scanner to ensure that they are virus free.

Stay tuned for more information (and maybe fancy images from Geoff at GameTech).

Okay I've decided on a submission process.

When you are ready to submit a build

1. Email me geoffb[AT]garagegames.com with the subject line "Community Contest" and I will email you instructions to upload your files to an FTP account.

2. You may add any descriptions/videos/promotions/etc for your submission as a comment to this blog.

3. After I have made sure the files are virus free I will make them available via skydrive (thanks for the help on this Luis!) and post the link here in the blog.

Ill be back here in a few hours for community power hour to answer any questions!

I think I'll take an old TGE project and make it a Military Scenario for this contest. I'm going to make it a volcanic military obstacle course with rocket and gun turrets, hot lava, raining volcanic debris, and possibly some AI. Kind of a point A to point B gauntlet style course from hell ... so to speak.

Here is a video from the old project that I need to populate and make more military style, but should be a good starting base:

@geoff: No problem - always glad to help
Do keep in mind that SkyDrive has a 100Mb limit on file size - So submition larger than that will have to be split into parts

@all: Good luck to all entrants

I'm certainly going to need luck at the pace I'm going. Is anyone else sweating the deadline as much as I am?

I worked with Glok615 on the following:

i113.photobucket.com/albums/n237/GM240414/2012-04-13_00005.jpg
It's pretty basic right now, just the one weapon and no AI enemies(the player goes through an obstacle course and then is presented with a firing range) but in the future I'd like to have a complete class-based shooter in the style of battlefield or SW:Battlefront, where little plastic soldiers battle for control of major sections of a house. Chairs, Sofas, Entertainment centers, Picnic Tables, Grills, Sinks, even Toilets would be valuable pieces of real estate to 2in. plastic men, who would fight and melt for their nation's stake in this strange new world.

There's a lot of bugs still but I'd like to think I'm off to a decent start. There was a lot more I wanted to do with this, but I just didn't have time. As it is, I'm about to fall over from exhaustion, having worked(along with Glok) over the past 16 hours to get this ready for presentation.

This uses Erik Madison's crouching/swimming resource and Afrim Kacaj's climbing code.

A little more than 2.5 hours for submission. If you have a build - email me and I will give you FTP instructions to send the file so I can make sure it is virus free and make it available for download.

We received 1 playable submission. I scanned it and have loaded it on my PC to verify it is safe. You can download it here:

Congratulations to Gilbert Marinelli and Glok615 for a great start to a military training themed game!

Only one playable submission? I was hoping for some more (although I didn't even TRY to participate so I'm not really in the position to complain ;) )

Just couldn't get mine finished, only worked on it for a day or two. Currently working 2 jobs. One for Cisco and another at a swim school. Not much time for side projects in Torque. Congrats Gilbert!

Wow, really? I wouldn't be against it at all if you guys decided to grant additional time for anyone else who might have been close to a submission.

Congrats Gilbert and Glok615. You guys know you finished last, right?

I really wanted to enter something something this week, but timing was bad. Congrats to Gilbert Marinelli and Glok615. I hope the lack of submissions doesn't deter future contests like this. I really like the concept demo theme of the last two.

So that's it then? We really won? I was just hoping we'd place. I wouldn't have gotten anything done though if not for the encouragement of the people here, so I owe you my thanks. I might actually continue this project now(with my friend's help), which was just an idea until you guys gave me a reason to pursue it.

Now, I don't mean to be a materialistic weasel, but, when/how will I get my prize? And what does "first-party store credit" mean? Anything in Garage Games' store, or just Garage Games-made products like the engines?

And out of curiosity, what will my friend Schuyler (Glok 615) be getting as his prize? He did all the C++ merging and tweaking as well as 2 of the models. Will he be getting store credit as well?

First-party means anything made by GarageGames. We can't give away third-party products since they'll miss out on a royalty cut. And no one wants that!

Yup. You will both get it since you were a team.

EDIT:
Just send Geoff or I what you would like from the store in an e-mail.

Darn, BrokeAss Games has some neat stuff. I'll have to think about what would be useful to me and get back to you. I'll also pass the message on to Schuyler, although some things went down IRL for him so it's unclear how soon he'll be back online.

Not sure what the royalty cut % is... but maybe you could consider just giving a steep discount as an option on these prizes? Say, if the dev's cut is 30%, you could offer $149 dollars in First-Party store credit, or 70% off any one-time cart purchase! (up to $149 value).

That would be awesome for those of us who pretty much already own all the First-Party stuff we could ever want from GG, and you could still forward along the full amount to the deserving devs if we decided to buy their products!

Juuuust a thought. :)

Do you guys think it would be a good idea for me to get the second Aste Combo Pack? I know it's an older resource but I plan to do a lot with TGE, due to it's low hardware requirements, and from what I've been told I can still port a lot of the content to T3D later.
