Community Power Hour 2012
by David Montgomery-Blake · 01/06/2012 (12:14 pm) · 32 comments
With the new year we want to reach out to the community and ask - what would you like to see for community power hour?
Currently a number of employees jump into the IRC room which if you are new to the community you can find at:
IRC Server: irc.maxgaming.net
IRC Port: 6667
Channel: #GarageGames
Other employees will jump into the forums and blogs to help answer questions or add their thoughts to a discussion.
As we make plans for 2012 this is your chance to get your two cents in. We are committed to directly engaging the community for an hour every Friday. So let us know what you would like to do with that time!

Maybe a log of the IRC discussion posted for those who can't attend...

I am a big fan of Konrads, suggestion, perhaps as a podcast that is downloadable. I dont think the issue is lack of community desire to participate but more of how to capture an audiance spread across the entire globe. That is nearly impossible with a purely 'live' format.

It's probably best not to record what goes on in there... ;)

Just going off of what everyone has said here.
My recommendation would be keep the weekly IRC as is, email the IRC discussions to all who want them(wasn't there a checkbox to recieve them via email?) and then have a podcast/video blog once a month covering a tutorial and/or question/answer, updates from Employees, 3rd Party, new products etc...
- "A Minute with Montgomery"
You could make an annual contest to fill that video/podcast void. Get a free art pack. Use those videos in your monthly 1 hour "show", then answer questions or have GG explain something useful regarding that month's video... kind of like a GG follow up. Show n' Tell with the teachers answering questions and explaining proper usage. Teach noobs and pros alike how to utilize things you the creators implement in the engine to their fullest potential.
This would cater to a much wider range of people than those that can make IRC every week. And cover the need for tutorials. You're basically consolidating monthly blogs, IRC, a good resource with GG expertise and putting them in a blog that is easy to access.
I see this as being less pressure on GG, gets the community more interactive and works within the website.

GG(and community) does a very respectable job of answering questions on the forums and providing resources and monthly blogs. I'd be lost without them. I always operate my endeavours on the KISS theory and what you currently have in place is pretty effective IMO.Just going off of what everyone has said here.

"A Minute with Montgomery"
That would be the longest and quite possibly strangest minute of many people's internet existence.

I'd really like to get the TGB Adventure Kit. I don't have Torque 2D, but I have iTorque 2D. The site says that I need to have Torque 2D to purchase the kit. Is that intentional? I'd really like to pick it up, but I probably would not buy Torque 3D just to be able to buy the kit.

This is slightly off-topic (sorry about that), but I haven't received a response to my question via the website contact form for days now, so I thought I'd ask here.I'd really like to get the TGB Adventure Kit. The Adventure Kit does not support iOS development. It is extremely script-heavy and the assets were developed with desktop resolutions in mind. Since it would take a massive overhaul to the kit, it is only available to T2D licensees.

Hey Konrad. I haven't seen anything come through the support list from you. Not sure what's going on there since I'm on all the lists. The Adventure Kit does not support iOS development. I see. Thanks. Could there be a way to buy the art assets only?

We don't have an asset only option in the store, but I wouldn't be surprised if Sickhead would have an option.

I'm working on a platformer on my free time. (In HTML5 for now, hopefully eventually using iTorque 2D.)
Thank you, David, your help is much appreciated! All hope is not lost then! :)

Ah, silly me, I meant the TGB Platformer Kit. I'm getting tired. Sorry about that. I'll try to get in touch with Phillip then, I assume this kit and its art availability is treated much the same.I'm working on a platformer on my free time. (In HTML5 for now, hopefully eventually using iTorque 2D.)

I'd like to see a return of the browser-based, dedicated-GG-channel client.
