Dubious Demo 2 Released!

I won't pretend that it hasn't almost killed me ... but after a gazzillion issues ... it's up.
Dubious Demo 2 ... this time ... it's random ...

Function creep appeared, and instead of a fast and long game ... you've got 2 fast and 2 long games. Technically it's the same level, but now there are also night missions.
Talking of function creep, I also came up with a basic hit detection for close range which I wasn't originally planning.
Anyhow, it goes like this:
You've 2 gametypes, night and day, night is short ranged weapons only
This is a demo of a randomized gameplay concept, it's a first person shooter, and the idea was to make it somewhere inbetween the all action silliness of "Call of Lawyers" and the unfair realism of Arma/Operation Flashpoint". Weapon ranges go out to 400m and bullets are dangerous than in most Shooters.
There are 4 availabe gametypes:
Clear Area
Clear Area Night
Fast Assault
Night Assault
Clear Area is split into 5 areas, each one must be cleaered of enemy before you can proceed to another. Start area is random, after that each area is chosen by the player by entering it - check your map. Inside each area there is a random playtype - "Clearance" (enemy randomly placed throughout area), "Strongpoint", enemy are all around one building (or sometimes 2), and "Counterattack", as "Clearance" but the enemy will aggressively defend and counterattack. Even without counterattack, all short ranged enemies will defend around their area.
Player starts with random weapons, one longrange, one shortrange.
Night missions are the same, but with reduced vision and shortranged weapons only.
Player starts with random weapons, one shotgun, one smg.
...
... infact ...

There's a readme ...
... so read it ... there's also a license on install with tips ... read them too ... also there's info in the game on how to play it ... it should all be fairly straight forwards ... hopefully. And if you spam me with issues which I've listed in the readme ... I will kill you ... to death! (flares nostrils)
Many thanks to orb for the bandwidth. There's a full list of credits in the readme, and also in the Credits page of the game which details pretty much everything I've used in constructing this.
Absolute Minimum Specs fo use:
Windows XP or Vista
Intel or AMD Processor @ 1 Ghz
512 MB RAM (1GB recommended for Vista)
100% DirectX compatible video card with 256 MB video RAM required
DirectX 9.0c+
It's T3D so you'll really need a dedicated graphics card.
Thanks to orb for sorting out the download page.

Dubious Demo 2 (125mb)
Windows only ... I'm not fashionable enough for a Mac ...
I was about to go to a little country pub to celebrate ... but there's black ice all over the drive and after a bit of wheel spinning I'll be staying in with a beer and chilli.

An default fresh install of Torque 3D 2009 Pro 1.1 Beta 3 works.
This computer is XP Pro service Pack 3, DirectX Runtimes March2009, 4g RAM/4g CPU, NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 with fresh new drivers.
Did I miss some critical system file update or other?

I have June2010 installed and runs smoothly
As Scott Burns says on post #14 of this thread even Beta 2 was tested and QA with June2010

@Caylo: i think Steve used T3D Beta 3 - in that case you might need to update your DirectX from March2009 to at least February2010I have June2010 installed and runs smoothly

Try Luis' suggestion and get the new runtimes, if it does not work try turning DXconsole from debug to retail (I've always had a problem with DXconsole since TGE1.52)

1- Yes, pssm1024 on normal - high doubles this
2- Terrain scuplted in T3D - go noise tool!
3-Mostly 512 DDS, some 1024 with multiple small textures on it to reduce drawcalls, I also use a "atlas" style texture for distant LODs
4- Player model rendering is off. FirstPerson weapons do use an offset though. I know nothing about postfx or fancy coding stuff in general ;)
5- AI are custom made
Multiplayer ... maybe coop. It'd be the last thing I'd do.

I like to push things in size/scale to see how far I can go, then trim back after it breaks. It's good to find how far you can go for future reference - waste time finding what works/fails now, than every time you build a new level. If I shortened the view distance, I could've had more stuff (check the fps change in day/night levels). But view distance is kinda what that level is about.

Nice stuff Steve, I never noticed the tagline 'One Bloke ... In His Bedroom ... Trying To Make Computer Games...' Love that too! :)

Love your weapon ranges, in real life modern infantry weapons have an effective range of about 400m-500m. God I hate modern warfare games where 100m is considered long.

Thanks Steve for the answers. :) Dare, I ask; whens final release? :O
#34
Final release ... ohhhh that's a good one ...
Next target will be a Demo release of the first couple of levels of the Narrative Campaign ... with the intention of this not being another 2 year wait between demo releases ...
... but obviously my schedule has always been when it's done ... so just like Valve really :P

I finally just got a chance to download it! Your making me excited about game dev all over again.

Heh, that's a great answer! I'm totally stealing that to use from now on.
Other Person: "So, when's your game going to be done?"
Me: "Oh, you know. I'm on the Valve development timeline."

Seems Norton uses don't like your game. The installer got deleted because of WS.Reputation.1http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2010-051308-1854-99

Norton seems to flag up on Siren lately with the Torque exe file being a threat and removing it from your system (false possitive), with something in the compiler that has been flagged up in the past. Best submit your game to norton for review then all should be good. Can take some time tho.
But yes, get a problem with Norton showing WS.Reputation.1 with the installer and removes it. Worth looking into Steve. What installer are you using?
