1/21/2010 IRC Hour

Greetings Community! Every 3rd Thursday of a month we have an IRC Hour for the community.

Where Is It?:
Server: irc.maxgaming.net
Channel: #GarageGames

When Is It?:
3:00pm PST
(6:00pm EST)

When Is It, Again?:
3:00pm PST
(6:00pm EST)
I feel the need to post this twice for some people who keep forgetting.

What Is It?: IRC Hour is a chance for the community to have real-time talks with Torque employees and our site admins, Scott Burns and David Montgomery-Blake. We will be using the IRC channel hosted by MaxGaming OnLine.

What It Is Not: Debugging other people's code, marathon one-on-one help sessions, soap-box rants, etc.

The Agenda:

New Leadership
Torque 3D Updates (1.1 Beta, Recent News, Documentation)
Global Game Jam
Preparations for GDC
Return of Video Tutorials
State of the Community

Community Suggestions:
Post your suggestions in the comments section.
- Torque 2D update

Well after the IRC update I have to say Im disappointed... The updates given for T2D are:

Quote:
<@[Torque]Mich> We do not have a public statement to make here in IRC

T2D was added to the IRC Hour topic list, but there was no need as there was nothing new was added. I dont need to know what features that are in the unreleased product. I would like to know the scheduled release timeframe to make an educated decision. That much I was told I guess, though not as a schedule...

Quote:
[19:04] <@[Torque]mattf> the final release of Torque 2D is a ways out
[19:04] <[Sickhead]James> @jzaun - don't wait for t2d

The problem is TGB wont be updated either. That leaves me with little choice, attempt to write a 3D version of the game I want to write, or find a new engine. I will try T3D out and see what its all about but I don't know 3D all that well... the whole reason for wanting a 2D engine. I will probably look into other 2D engines, but non offer what TGB potentially does.

I guess a third option would be to buy TGB, buy the source to TGB, then fix the bugs in the engine I just bought. I would hate to do that, why pay for a product I have to fix, but if I must I will, just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

This will be my last post on the matter of T2D updates, I know people must be getting irritated at me by now. If anyone wants to take this offline email me justin.zaun @ gmail.com

On the bright side, nothing new really to look at, I read the IRC text file, seemed more like propoganda than anything right now. Nothing really new in it. Most of it was really covered in different announcements already. I also own TGB, glad it at least shows I own T2D since I got the source code version. Oh well, will see where things are mid year. On the flip side, the world is coming to an end in 2012, so they really got till then to fix everything before everything else goes to he&& :)

Remember guys, it's the start of 2010, we are coming off a big move and the holidays, and the biggest announcements were already blogged about. We did announce the return of Lara's video tutorials, Josh Engebretson's QTWebKit integration, Torque 3D 1.1 Beta timeframe and features (such as Bullet implementation and hifi networking), new Community features coming up, and a bit more.

Keep in mind IRC is not about huge announcements. That's why we have blogs. It's an opportunity and treat for YOU, so you can talk to us directly and ask questions. When someone asks "What's the timline for PRODUCTX", we can't give you a date. Torque 2D is in the middle of a major overhaul, and as Eric said we are all about Managing Expectations. We aren't going to dangle imaginary fruit in front of you anymore, or give unreasonable timeframes.

If you didn't get what you wanted out of IRC Hour, then you may have been in there for the wrong reasons. If you didn't get the information you wanted, it's not because we are holding back information. It's because the answers are not ready yet, or you didn't ask the right questions.

Want to use TGB, but worried about compatibility issues. Get TGB Pro. The fixes are easy and available, and the cost goes toward Torque 2D. Timeframe? Not for a while after GDC.

@eb - Thanks for posting the log. Always a huge help.

@Everyone else - Thanks for attending. We love talking to you one on one, and remember that IRC isn't a once a month thing. The channel is always open, and you will find it is pretty active. I'm in the channel every day, fully available to continue to answer questions.

I was pleased to see that all the engines will be going through offsite QA, I look forward to this year.

East LA yes. (actually, closer to Hysperia than La, but hey, no one knows where Hysperia is)
