Also. Have you considered contract work where you retain the rights to publish after a given amount of time? Say I pay for a game character at a reduced price and I have unlimited rights of use, but after a year you have the right to resell (in different textures or something) to the general public? Perhaps that is the hobby aspect?

So what would be included with a game character in the $800-$5000 range? I understand complexity of the model, but what about animations, rigging ect...Also. It looks like you have somewhat figure out how our Hobbyist pricing may work! Pretty much, we will be offering a REDUCED rate for Hobbyist to give them that chance to try to get their game out there. After set amount of time, Digital Shock will have the rights to re-sell the assets. However, if the hobbyist wishes to keep the rights to the assets exclusive. They can pay the remaining fee from the reduce rate to own it. No interest!
$800~5000 USD is just model+texture.
That doesn't mean you can't get a model+textures+rig+animation for under $1000 USD.
Rigging and animations is a separate fee. I don't put it in there because it varies a lot per client.

I understand how things vary. And based on the the cost of my time do the same work very affordable:) (not that I can do that quality either)
Having something done the way I want it and to my specs is well worth that price range.
Thanks!

Thanks for the quick response. I think you will have options that should fit into every aspect of the markets, no matter how big or little the studio is.I understand how things vary. And based on the the cost of my time do the same work very affordable:) (not that I can do that quality either)

We are open to anything, send in a request.
@Randy
Another Sneak peak of what Digital Shock may be offering, is group environment packs. This means the community can send in a request for an environment pack to be made. If we have enough pre-paid clients, we will create this pack and release it. Those who have put themselves under pre-paid will get a discount of course. More detail in next blog :)
The price range is base of the polycount, from a Nintendo DS character to an Xbox360 Gears of war character to make it more clear.

I really like the idea of community packs based on pre-orders. I noticed one of the sites advertising here occasionally also makes mobile-oriented low-poly packs. I think those could do well (he added selfishly).

Could you estimate the average time budget in hours for the model presented in the top of this blog post (the anime boy) for modelling, texturing and rigging (no animation yet, no detachable body armor), please? Thank you!
@Michael Perry
The terms you have used, "true-so-to-speak" and "false", are completely asinine. There is a SINGLE definition to the term "Indie"
I can talk "philosophy" with you the whole night with good beer :), but my definitions are not that "asinine" despite your attempt to school me ;) Or, perhaps, there is no sense of sarcasm (and/or humor) left in Oregon?

Maybe instead of asinine, I could have gone with vague or unheard of? At any rate, no since quibbling over words. The debate over the definition probably will never end, as long as everyone can acknowledge that the word Indie (with no other decorators) does not have a dollar amount tied to it.

@Funky - "Define Indie" convo over beer? I'm there!!!! If you make it to GDC, the beer is on me =)Maybe instead of asinine, I could have gone with vague or unheard of? I wish I could make it to GDC... but just in case, I'll take Samuel Adams on tap ;)
As for the "Indie" definition debate, it's very true that "indie" is supposed to be non-funded, however, I've seen a lot of "false" indies that silently get various funding (or upfront royalties) and participate in indie game competitions ;) So, I developed a 3 level "indie" definition for a beer conversation.

@Funky - That's crazy. My beer of choice is Sam Adams too! In regard to Indies actually receiving 3rd party funding, then the statement is right on. They are not true independent developers. I have read stories, however, of developers who happen to be pretty well self-financed due to past careers. Just saying there are precedents that prove there are high budget indie devs out there, just as there are probably examples of what you are claiming.

Great looking stuff, But why can't you guys produce just some great generic base models of similar quality for indies. You have the talent and the man-power to do it. A kind of supplement to your contract base work. I would really love a generic rpg anime pack. Done in the style similiar to the image in your post. But it would cost me $2000.00USD to have a generic, anime male and female pair wouldnt it. :) I would like to see what can a hobbyist get in your next post. And once again that's some good looking art.

Sounds like these folks wouldn't be averse to co-op contribution. Maybe a nice male / female pair set wouldn't be a bad idea using that model (similar to their environment pack co-op contribution model.) I'd throw in a few bones to get something like that rolling, i'm sure others would as well.
