GarageGames.com Site Update: Jan. 23, 2009

by Jacob Fike · 01/23/2009 (5:15 pm) · 43 comments

Hello again to another website update. Each week, we're looking through the list of the issues you'd like to see addressed, and keep banging away on the site. This being the second week since the launch, we're really pleased how the community has gotten over the initial shock and is throwing lots of useful comments our way. Keep it up! I know the web team's presence is a little light on the forums, but we've got people like David Montgomery-Blake combing through all that information to present it to us in a digestible format. This allows us to spend our timing getting things done, rather than just talking about it.

We focused our efforts on some major issues this week, so let me outline them below.

68.233.5.139/~transfer/Pics/army_of_darkness.jpgContinuing with our zombie theme from last week, I'd like to present a classic horror flick. You'll see the tie-in a second...

The New Shopping Cart System

In order to keep pace with Internet security vulnerabilities, we beefed up our shopping cart to take advantage of improved fraud protection. This is good for our customers because it makes it much harder for people to fraudulently use your credit cards online. These measures are not much different than the precautions most major online retailers, like Amazon.com, take to protect their customers. We did see a few issues this week related to international purchases, but those should be resolved now. Of course, I can't give you specifics on what we changed or I'd open up our system to potential vulnerabilities. =P

Our payment processors check the information you submit against the information your bank has on file. If some of this information is incorrect, you will be brought back to the billing information screen and see an error message about the billing address or card security code being incorrect. Depending on how your bank handles authorizations, you may see failed attempts as pending charges on your bank statement. These authorizations will not result in actual charges to your account, however your bank may not clear them for several days, so please double check your information before submitting it. If you receive an error when attempting to purchase, but it does result in an actual charge to your account, please contact support@garagegames.com.

E-mail Notifications

We have drastically re-worked our e-mail messaging system so all e-mails you receive from us should be much more readable. We have also changed our system settings to decrease the probability of our e-mail hitting your spam folder. However, we're still seeing some spam issues with Hotmail and Yahoo e-mail addresses, so make sure nothing's falling through the cracks if you use one of those services.

Stickies

We now have the ability to put sticky threads at the top of forum categories. We already have one sticky for the TGB public forums, and Deborah's taking requests. If you have other threads that you think are sticky-worthy, e-mail her at deborahm@garagegames.com with the thread URL and the reason you think it's important to be "stuck."

Other Odds 'n' Ends

Here's some stuff that I don't have a ton to write about, per se, but I'm sure will be appreciated:

  • TDN Fix: If you were getting the name conflict error, you should be able to change your name and log into TDN now.
  • Ignition System: We saw some problems with our ignition system, mostly for new product downloads. If your product is unable to register itself, please use the offline registration form.
  • Watched Threads: As requested, you should now be able to see a list of all of your watched threads in the "forums tab," and not just the oldest ten.
  • Watched Blog Notifications: You'll be happy to note that blogs can now be watched just like forum threads.

Whew! That's all for this week. We know there's a lot more to do, and we're prioritizing things as best as we can to get as much functionality to you as quickly as possible. Expect more from us as we continue to improve GarageGames.com and continue to e-mail support@garagegames.com if anything is wrong specifically with your account.

UPDATE 1/28/2009: We have just finished a small update to the site that fixes the page links for blogs and resources. For those of you having issues registering your software with your ignition keys, that should be cleared up. Also in this update is a new shopping cart summary that appears when you click add to cart. That's it for now, but we'll have a more substantial update next Wednesday, Feb. 4th.

I like the ability to see all the watched threads at once. Nice.

One thing I would like to add is to be able to see all the Watched Blogs and Watched Resources.
If this is already possible it is not apparent to me. (Still getting use to the new site)

Hey here is a suggestion. How about on the Forums Tab you give the user the ability to see 5 post (subject lines only) into each section. Maybe the user can even set how many deep he would like to see in each category. This would give them ability to see everything new at a glance.

"watched blogs" don't appear to be working for me yet. I can select "Notify me of new comments", but can't view watched blogs in a consolidated list anywhere. Is this in the works? (using Firefox 3.05, XP)

Keep up the good work...

I have a suggestion for the forums. One of the problems I have always had with the GG forums, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this, is that when I want to ask for help on something I have to choose a single forum for my post to appear in. Yet there is so much overlap between forum topics that the same post would be just as relevant in several others, all of which may have regular readers that will know the answer to my question. For example, if I want to know about some aspect of scripting that applies to both TGE and TGEA, I have at least 4 forums to choose from (the public and private forums of both TGE and TGEA). The public forums would seem to be the best bet, due to them being visible to more people. But as a Torque owner, I have to admit that I don't regularly look into the public forums, and I bet I'm not the only one guilty of that. And even if that were not an issue, I still need to choose between the TGE and TGEA forums, which may have very different readerships.

So, I have an idea that would go some way towards solving the problem. We used to be able to "subscribe" to forums, but that didn't really add any value. All it did was hide the forums that you weren't subscribed to, which was pretty useless. However, a variation on that idea could be really useful. The simple version would work as follows: Each of us has the ability to subscribe to whatever forums we have access to. We each have a kind of "My Subcriptions" page, in which we see a flat list of all threads from all our subscribed forums. It would look and behave just like the contents of a single forum, but with an extra column showing the name of the originating forum.
A more sophisticated version of the same idea: Rather than a single list of subscribed forums, the "My Subscriptions" page would show a list of custom forums, each of which would work just like the subscriptions described above. So, for example, I might create a custom forum that I call "TGE", that comprises a subcription to both the public and private TGE forums. Then I'd have another custom list that I call "TGEA", subscribed to both public and private TGEA forums, and so on. I would probably also create one that is subscribed to all four of those forums.
I would still have to choose a single place to post a call for help, but if everyone is making use of the custom forums in that way, then I will be more confident that my question will be seen by someone who can answer it.
With a system like that in place, you could actually go back to having very specialized forums, but users would still have a nice simplified view over them, particularly if you were to create a few default subscription lists for new users.

Sticky threads... so very awesome. Something this new site has enabled us to add :)

"...I'd really like to see the resources categorized..." This would be huge; having them all stirred together is not helpful in the least.

But sticky threads... hell yeah! This is something that actually was missing on the old site... Very cool to have finally.

David Montgomery-Blake is an absolute saint. You guys are lucky to have someone like him :D

Oh, by the way... I'm having an issue looking at past blogs. If I'm on the main blog page (Blogs Link) and I click on the arrow or any of the numbers, I get a page not found error (same with this link: Here)

Thanks for all your hard work guys!

Banner not really needed on top of every blog; notifications don't work for watched stuff, next blog (number or arrow links) gives a not found page;

Should I kick off the cache or anything?

Other than that site is getting back in shape, for the better;

On the main blogs page... clicking on another page number, just brings up a page that says "Page Not Found"

BUG: When viewing the latest 'resources' or 'blogs' on the 'Whats New' page, clicking to the next page or previous page takes you back to the GG homepage. Also clicking on individual page numbers does the same thing.

FEATURE: Need all the same abilities we had in the 'My Account' section where you could view all posts done by you, and so on.

LIKES/DISLIKES: I like the new layout. It is very clean and its nice to see a major site overhaul.

I dislike the fact that a good portion of old features were not carried over and the site is loaded with numerous navigation bugs. Many which hinder the ability to navigate the site. This site should be pushed over to a testing server and the old site brought back until GG can work out the 'MAJOR' bugs. 'Minor' bugs are to be expected. Think about it, what if Google borked their site like this? Imagine if you couldn't click to the next page in the search results, etc. Very frustrating!

However, with that said, I hope the web developers can get these issues fixed pretty quick. It shouldn't take a month to resolve these issues and it should be a top priority. I would be embarrassed if it was my site and portions were not functioning. Especially with a community as big as this one.

With that said, I am waiting patiently and appreciate the ability to voice my opinion. I've been a paying member/tester since 2004, and plan to keep that tradition going.

Well, I'm not going to feel quite at home for a while, but it's a step in the right direction. I think the biggest feature for me would be the return of the blog/resource links in profiles.

I won't purchase another thing on this site until this behavior is resolved. What that guy went through the other day, when GG overcharged him by more than $10,000, is asinine.

If this had happened to me I would have blamed my bank. However, since my bank calls me regularly about charges that do not fit my "buying" history. The other week I received a new CC card from my bank. I thought why? I called and it turns out I had purchased something from a vendor that had a service that was known for identity theft. The bank automatically re-issues a new card.

On the site I agree with Apparatus. The banner needs to be smaller when actually reading the Blogs. I see his picture and someone else's and I am constantly thinking it is their Blog. Perhaps a stronger border above the blog to separate the Blog from the Banner. Oh and having the actual Bloggers picture there:)

The blog and ressource page links seemingly does not work!

*edit -mentioned 200 times before!

New guy here. Still unable to log into the TDN. I am logged into the system, but it just keeps bringing me back to the log in screen of TDN, and side bar links are inop as well... they do a page refresh but it just keeps saying "log in required". If I'm not logged in, it brings me to the log in screen, but then back to the login required message on the home TDN screen.

Maybe my account is not activated for this yet since I just got the software a few days ago?

- Probably mentioned before, but the whole profile page is dumbed down. I'm sure there are some people that wants all that functionality back
- Wanted Ads / Job Advertising
- Bring back the Projects/Teams Management, and add more features.
- How about adding Project pages? So Teams can actually have a page just for their project.... like www.garagegames.com/mygame?

When you edit an existing resource, the "tags" are removed and replaced with the word "array". You have to re-enter the tags.

I would like to see a way to browse the resource db. the one you have now realy requires you too know what your looking for.

Did I read correctly (somewhere. I can't find it right now) that resources will no longer allow you to upload zips so code can be downloaded.

The thread it was in was talking about how profile pics uploads were gone as well.

you've kindly put the time on the forum posts. can you also put the last post time on the blogs listed in the "what's new" and "blogs" tabs?
