Blog post
I recently released the latest iteration of the 3D modelling tool I am working on entitled Shaper.

For those not familiar with the project Shaper is a shareware 3D modelling tool along the lines of MilkShape 3D or Character FX. It has import and export functionality for both DTS and DSQ files. See the Shaper page for more information.

www.inversesoftware.com/Shaper/

Here is what has changed since the last version.

Bugs
- fixed not being able to create primitives in animate mode
- fixed face extrusion in edge only render mode not respecting the original selection
- fixed texture coordinate translation undo
- fixed being able to incorrectly interact with irrelevant transform gizmo arrows in orthographic views
- fixed unnecessary reference axes being drawn
- fixed 3DS import not correctly importing scenes with multiple meshes

New Features
- added first use dialog
- added start up tips
- added tool to move key frames in track view
- added rubber band selection to texture coordinate editor
- animations embedded in Torque DTS files are now imported

Feature Changes
- tool usage is stopped if selection mode is changed and selection mode is not relevant to the tool (for example if the selection mode is changed while creating boxes box creation shall stop)
- improved tool tips
- improved tutorial
- key frames displayed as ellipses instead of rectangles and time indicator is thinner to make it clear where the time is relative to the keyframes
- track view frame labels line up better with corresponding frame and ticks included

I am starting to devote some serious time to documentation. This version includes a tutorial that covers the basic modelling functionality in Shaper.

As always I am looking for feedback from users. I would ideally like to have existing MilkShape 3D users try it out with the intention of switching. When you come across something that causes you to go back to MilkShape 3D let me know what it is and I shall attempt to fix it for the next version.

Thanks in advance to anyone that takes the time to try it out and provide feedback.

Alexander, thanks for this. It looks very cool. I dug right in and tried to create new models from scratch (as opposed to importing) and I've run into a couple of crashing bugs. What's the best place to report them?

Rob, please post them at inversesoftware.com/Forums/phpBB2/. Alternately send them directly to me at info@inversesoftware.com.

Assuming you can reproduce the crash it would be great to know the precise steps involved.

Thanks

@Alexander,

can you put version numbers/date on your distributed files so people know if they already have this version or not?

Probably something like:

shaper-2006-0104.exe

Looks interesting - downloaded the BETA and will play with it over the next couple of days.

Milkshape gives me a headache, hopefully I can use this without pulling what little hair I have left out!

@Charles,

Thanks for the tip. I will start doing that from the next release.

The only reason i went back to Milkshape was because the demo ran out, and i couldn't use shaper anymore! I would suggest not making the demos expire, if there is no way to purchase the program (i would have purchased it, if there was the option!)

@Andrew,

I am aiming to set up a way to purchase the program in time for the next release.

Alexander, this program is really a dream come true. I was not looking forward to the pipeline of getting custom art ingame.

One question: Is it possible to save out DTS with animations intact? For example, all the RTS-Starter Kit DTS files have 4 animations inside them. You can import a DTS and see/edit the animations in shaper, but you can't seem to export a DTS with the animations intact. It looks like either DTS static shape file, or DSQ for animations. Certainly I plan on using DSQ for FPS style file formats, but would also like to mirror the RTS file setup if possible.
