Blog post
Arcanoria (www.arcanoria.com) is a developing MMORPG that is scheduled for initial public alpha release this fall. We have a growing team, and we're quite excited about our project. Here is a sample of some of the artwork that's been done by one of our artists:

These next two images are works in progress:

Nice work, the one graphic peeve that I see (sorry) is that the title 'Site News' on the website doesn't have a drop shadow, whereas welcome and community do. Good Luck!

high qual

Thanks guys. That Site News header is on one of the two Work In Progress pieces (the two bottom ones), so there are definitely issues with it. Good eye though, we'll make sure to fix that before it goes live!

I *love* that logo!

Nice art and the website design looks good as well! I look forward to seeing the progress of this one! :)

Great branding, nice site. You've got some fantastic talent there. :)

Thanks for the comments everyone!

We're really lucky to have a couple of fantastic artists on our team: Johan Schwind (who has done most of the work to date, including everything in this blog post), and we've just this week added Matt Freyman, who is the Art Director for the Dream Games (www.mydreamrpg.com) Gryphon MMO project, and very talented as both an artist and as a manager of data and resources and ideas.

By the way, I just happen to be the Project Director for Gryphon myself. :) We've got 31 developers working on this project currently, and we should be making an official press release about it soon. (Oops! I think I just leaked some information! :) )

This post is probably going to be flamed but someone needs to be honest

DUDE THIS SUKS

The only halfway thing decent thing you got going is that title page with the shield

I went to your site and looked at the pictures you've got going of your "world"

the first thing i noticed is that no one in your team has the skills to remove the two "health" bars

that come with the demo

That already sent alarm bells flashing

Then your "terrain" .....not a rock, tree, shrub, bush, anthill anywhere???????

no signs , tracks, mudpuddles , weeds , flowers ?????

the buildings are plan drab and utterly uninspiring

Not a soul to bee seen on the streets is this the first mmo to be utterly devoid of npc's?

and then the number of buildings so badly placed on the terrain that u can uctually see under the building

and to the inside is just a joke

You have how many people on this project?

Guys your wasting your time

Make somthing like zuma first then tackle a bigger project

EDIT
i went back to look at more screen shots to see if i was to harsh in criticism

I wasnt!

I saw a few other shots with isolated trees but they look so artificial and placed that they
actually make the scene worse

have u guys played games like wow, guildwars, etc etc

LOOK at their scenes and learn how to place objects

sorry ;(

@Mark Jordaan: Thanks for taking the time to investigate our project. :) However I would note that you didn't investigate very far to find out that our status is that we've thrown out our entire code base (which admittedly wasn't much in the first place) and started over (having recently switched to TGEA), and have been dealing with many administrative and team membership changes, not to mention a huge Design and Planning effort thus far. In other words, we fully understand there's effectively zero world content, and it's interesting that you should judge it against a completed project. This is work in progress, not a finished MMO, or even close to it at this point. And you assert that we have no "skill" because we didn't bother modifying a part of the default game GUI that was going to be thrown out anyway? That's a bit presumptuous don't you think?

Truth is, we knowingly have taken some steps backward because of our recent technology changes, and currently have no scripting done at all, and no permanent areas in place. We're just finishing up the Design and Planning phase of our project and only now moving into implementation. The video that you seem to be referring to was actually done back in May, using the old TGE engine, just to show some proof of concept, and not as a permanent part of the world. Our current SVN is TGEA based, and does indeed have trees and other foliage, but that's not even a permanent part of the world either. Our "permanent" terrain is being built in L3DT this week, and doesn't even exist yet. Only after that terrain is in place is it possible to add all the other things to make it an engaging world. It's on our short list, trust me. ;)

Before you judge someone else's project, maybe take the time to find out where they actually are in their development process. But thanks for your interest. :)

Yeah Arcanor, why can't your game be completed in the beginning of development? Wouldn't that just make things easier? Then you wouldn't have to waste all that time developing it. Sheesh.

@russell

tks for once again illustrating the point that sarcasm is the lowest form of wit

FYI this post was based on the statmennt that this mmo was supposed to be released

initial public alpha release on August 31, 2007.

my assesment of the site based on screenshots on their website was as stated above

@arcanor

hell if you are supposed to go public LAST Month
then what the hell am i supposed to think when i see the screen shots on your website in its curent state

@Mark Jordaan: My fault for not updating the original post above, which was dated 3 months ago. We've since pushed our Initial Public Alpha deadline back (as indicated on our website, and in several other blogs and posts around the net). This is now fixed in this thread. Thanks for the tip.

Note, however, that even an Alpha "release" is likely to have many things missing or out of place, and should not be judged against a complete game in the retail phase. Alphas are intended to test specific functionality that IS there, but not be a complete game yet.

Contrary to popular belief i am not a moron!

I never once said i was comparing it to a complete game!

I was comparing to the statement made in the fist few lines of this blog
and btw if you look at my profile you will see that not only do i know exactly what the development cyle of any project is, you will see that i've been doing this for longer than most subscribers to this forum have been alive

But if you have fixed your original statment on this blog then this wont happen again, will it ;)

That you may not know the whole story?

No sarcasm intended. Frankly, I think telling someone their project sucks and that they're wasting their time is in pretty poor taste. Most people ask questions before they make accusations. That would have been a more respectful route to take here.

dude!

i said at the front of my post that i never expected it to be popular

i saw a number of posts praising the art and telling you how fantastic it is

I looked at it and saw something thing else

if you can not take criticism you're in the wrong game.......

besides beleive it or not, it WAS constructive criticism

i didnt just say

IT SUKS

i told u why

was it harsh ? yea probably

consider it a character building experience

Russell Fincher   (Sep 13, 2007 at 20:08 GMT)
I'm going to make a Haiku out of your last post:

i didnt just say...

was it harsh ? yea probably

i told u why... dude!

Don't we all feel a little better now? And Mark, I don't really have anything to do with the Arcanoria project.
