Some times the most rewarding projects are those that are done for free and for your local community.
I recently completed a volunteer project for our local zoo, it was a two part project.
1) was to redesign and find an external hosting site for their web page
2) create a kiosk application for their upcoming butterfly event.
The website was fun and interesting, but the kiosk application was a [b]BLAST[/]! I wrote the entire kiosk application myself (well actually put it together with macromedia director). What a trip that was! I had never used director before, so I had to learn the app rather quickly and get the flow done in 2 weeks. Needless to say I kicked it out in 1.5 weeks, Initial feedback from the lead vet at the zoo was overwhelming, the entire staff loves the flow as well as most if not all of the visitors.
The flow is actual two separate kiosk applications; one of which is geared towards adults, talking about the different types of butterflies local to the area and what types of plants they feed on. The second flow was a children flow where a child could touch a butterfly body part and get in depth information about that part.
I will post some pictures later this evening after I get back from the zoo :)

Just got back from the zoo an hour or so ago, man what a feeling it was to see everyone enjoying the flows. The most rewarding part was seeing the kids having a blast with the child flow, they seemed to really enjoy learning about the different anatomy. I must have spent a good half hour just watching everyone playing with the two flows, my wife said I was glowing with excitement and pride.

One can do just about anything with photoshop :) I only did the coding for the page, the design and art work was done by two other idividuals. All in all we had 3 people working the website, myself a designer and an graphic artist. The designer spent many many hours with the zoo and monroe county to come up with something that I think is truely amazing. Once the design was nailed down I went to work and hammered out the site with php.
Just need to find a host so I can upload the pics I took today :) would have tossed them on my web server, but stopped by dynamic dns hosting service a few months back.

It was busy work, just a little something to keep me frome boredom. The entire project from start to finish lasted roughly 3 months, my part (coding it) took a bit over a month.
I took a couple of pictures yesterday evening, just need to find someone to host them ;) The shots are kind of dark, forgot to use the flash *DOH!*.
