Trying something new and getting paid to do it!
After two grueling semesters this past year, it's finally summer again. It's a shame that I havn't been involved as I wanted to be in making games, but the worst seems to be behind me. However, this summer I still can't seem to escape academia.

Instead of interning at GarageGames again this summer, I decided to go a little bit more local and take up a research position at Towson University in Maryland. Although games are what I truely want to do, but I still have another year before I can get fully involved in them, and this should be a very interesting program.

The program is the Research Experience for Undergraduates and consists of 7 other undergraduates from all over the nation and is funded by the Navy Research Lab. My particular project is in computer vision, developing a face recognition system. So, instead of taking data and creating an image, I'm taking an image and extracting data. So it's a little change of pace for me, but interesting nonetheless.

This year is also my last year of colege and luckily should be pretty light on work as I only have to take 12 credits each semester, so hopefully I can get back into making games again.

Get all the diverse experiences you can Chris. It will help you in the long run and being a young man still, you need to make sure you weight all the options. You have years to decide what you truly want to do.

Congratulations on the internship and all the best :o)

Chris,

I think you're making a great choice. Opportunities like that don't come along too often. Sounds like you'll gain some pretty unique experiences this summer.

Good Luck!

Tim

Very itneresting. I remember reading about a new device called a nouse that allowed you to control a mouse pointer using your nose. Seeing as the nose is always convex, it makes for a perfect recognition tool. If you are interested, I believe it was on howstuffworks.com. Just search for nouse.
