Blog post
I decided to start this blog at the very beginning of the design process to show the experiences of a completely noob game designer/programmer and artist (some challenge huh?). I debated on waiting until I had all of the game design completed and some screen shots but I will be using this blog as a sort of accountability tool...meaning my hope is that people will read this and ask about the progress from time to time to keep me motivated.
The game will be in 2D (using 3d sprites) and will be developed in TGB.
Here are some basic concepts and themes thus far:
Eternal Reign (name still up for debate) will be a turned based game that will include the standard (at least by today's standards) tactical map overview (world movement) component and the more details combat phase. The game world is set on an alternate earth during the time of somewhere between 3000 to 2000 BC (think early Babylonia). Man, as you know was created to have dominion over all life "in the beginning" (my belief so no point in debating this point here). Unfortunately, he fell after his transgression in the garden. This is where the alternate reality will begin. As a punishment, all creatures will be made equal to man and will all strive to reign over all creation.
Opposing factions in the game will include some variations of men (nations), beasts of the field, cold ones (reptilian or dinosaur factions) and the forgotten ones (insect race).
The game will contain some basic economy, politics in the forms of forming alliances with other species (within in reason...there will be some inherent limitations which will come out later) and a God approval system that will provide additional benefits or punishments. There will also be a flip side to this as well in terms of an evil approval system being issued by the "deceiver"...more on how all of that will play out in a later post.
Battle game play will allow for simple but detailed battle planning prior to battles taking place, and will have a new army general or leader influence component that will play very strongly in the game (I will explain this later but trust me when I say it is a very novel idea and I do not believe ever done before). The battle sequence of the game will, again, be discussed in a later entry entry but I am very excited about some ideas I have.
That's it for now. I am currently putting my game design in detail on paper before I do any coding so once that is completed, I will be back to update.
Any feedback on the game details as they are posted would be greatly appreciated.

Completely newbie game designer/programmer and artist. Check.
The game will be in 2D (created using 3d Models) and will be developed in TGB. Check.
TBS with combat screen seperated from overland map window. Check.
Multiple Races. Check.
The basics of what you are doing matches up with the basics of my Master of Magic in Torque Project I am starting. After we both get our feet wet and get started we might want to think about working together a bit and/or sharing resources.
Good Luck!

FWIW, you may be interested posting about it over here.
Cheers!

Once I am done with this design document (well, that is relative I guess because I am sure I will be making additions and modifications through this entire process) I am going to take a break from some of the monotony and work on some concept models and artwork and will make a few posts here.
