Blog post
I knew that title would get some attention!

Ok, so, I thought I'd write a blog about this contest that my employer is running. I was talking with my boss earlier today and he expressed some concerns and disappointments in the contest entries thus far ... so I thought I'd try to get the word out a bit more by telling everyone ...

As the title implies, the prize for the contest is $5,000 -- the contest ends in about a week though, so read quickly and submit your idea's ... oh, did I forget to mention that? The whole point in the contest is to submit idea's ... simple as that ... HOWEVER, if you want to RISE above the rest ... the best way to do so is to not only have a great idea, but also prove your idea ... or at least conceptualize your idea in a really cool way (Show your idea ... don't just say it!)

So, whats this contest all about? Simple ... it's a Geek Marketing Contest ... heh, so now you know why I bring it to your attention ... I figure at least 9 out of 10 of us GG'ers are fairly in tune with the geekier side of life.

To link directly to the contest page, go here ...

Oh, I might note, if I weren't an employee and my idea's "counted" (for the contest of course) ... I'd keep this little secret all to myself and buy a new MacPro with my winnings ... but, since I don't qualify ... I figured I'd open the door to the community ...

So, back to that conversation I had with my boss this afternoon, eh?

We were chatting and he mentioned that lots of people had great idea's, but no one has brought there idea's to life yet ... and he's just waiting for someone to show off there talents and put the rest of the geek community to shame (gotta love paraphrasing, haha). He mentioned the idea of a really addicting (dare I say, VIRAL) video game ... of course, it'd have to go with the flow of the contest ...

So ... if you've got some fun addicting games you've written in the past just for fun ... classic remakes or what have you ... and you can find a way to tie it into the contest ... you could win $5,000 ...

Simple as That!

Oh and, for those that have small attention spans ... here's the latest update to the contest blog, it's in LARGE letters and bolded ... must be important, eh?

Quote:

MAY 8TH: As of May 8th, 2007, with approximately 45 idea submissions, we have not yet received any submissions of viral videos, flash animations or applications that might help spread the word virally. I want to emphasize that if you can create a viral video, flash animation or even an application that can help promote Axosoft's OnTime, your likelihood of winning the $5,000 prize is extremely high! There's still time to create and submit your videos, flash and other potential viral apps!

thanks for letting us know about this, more then a week might be nice though ;-) but I'll see what I can do.

Hey cool you work for Axosoft? I use their OnTime software to keep track of my projects. I was able to get a license for $5 during that crazy blog marketing experiment they had.

David Higgins   (May 09, 2007 at 03:29 GMT)
@J, sorry for the short notice ... good luck with the submissions!

@Joe, nice :)

To help get you all started ... on what not to do ...

Yep ... it's a game ... sorry, didn't use Game Builder this time around ... however, with Behaviours in 1.5 ... you could probably do this in TGB quicker then I did it in Game Maker ... ;)

You can download it here ...

Yep ... it's cheesy ... unbelievably flaky ... and ... with a bit more patience and some more thought put behind it ... it could be entertaining, amusing, and ... win someone some cash ...

PS: I really doubt this game would make into the qualifying rounds ... but it's worth a good chuckle the first time around ;)

We use OnTime as well!

Leroy Frederick   (May 09, 2007 at 15:09 GMT)
I use (or well be using) OnTime (the free hosted web edition) too, it's a nice product, nice offer and (seemingly) a nice company! :0) This doesn't count as geek marketing idea for Axosoft does it?

Chris Calef   (May 09, 2007 at 18:16 GMT)
@David: Thanks for sharing that offer, that's really cool!! Hope somebody from here wins and makes their game with the $5K!

In reading your blog I just had to give in to my internal grammar Nazi, though:

<grammar rant> "Ideas" doesn't need an apostrophe! It's just a regular plural. If the idea has its own idea, such as "this idea's ideas really suck" then you need an apostrophe. Or if the idea is involved in a contraction, such as "that idea's really dumb", then you also need an apostrophe. However, "give us your ideas" will _never_ need an apostrophe!</grammr rant>

Thanks for listening, I feel a lot better now. =-)

I have plenty of game idea's's. To save you time and money I will sumbit them to you for the low cost of $3000, and a legal contract for said idea's;.

edit: I just saved your company 2 grand in five seconds. Imagine what I can do if I really thought about it.

mb --- hahaha ...

Okay, okay, I got it... igodit.

Create an online contest giving away 5,000$...

David: By the time all this is over I want you to do the math and tell me if it's true... are ideas really a dime a dozen?

David Higgins   (May 11, 2007 at 01:27 GMT)
Matt, sadly ... so far ... we've only had about 30-40 idea's submitted ... one of them will win the contest ... so ... you do the math ... $5,000 / 30 = 166 and some decimal value ....

Matt Troup   (May 11, 2007 at 04:42 GMT)
David, no worries. You may not get a lot of submitted ideas but you are getting more marketing for your company/product. I'm not at the level where I think I need your product (hasn't hit me, and nobody's convinced me otherwise), but when I do get to that level you have one of two products I know (think) that do this job.

I didn't know about your product until now, so the contest has done its job whether I participate or not.

David Higgins   (May 11, 2007 at 05:58 GMT)
Matt, :)

Scott Evernden   (May 15, 2007 at 01:04 GMT)
LOL .. my ideas are worth more than a chance for $5000, but thanks anyway ..

David Higgins   (May 15, 2007 at 01:28 GMT)
Scott, your welcome ;)
