Your dev shot does not get accepted because no one is allowed to advertise stuff on the main page if not directly related to GG. You're technically not supose to do it here either as I found out not too long ago.

Edit:
Apparently you are allowed to post in .plans afterall. Thanks for the info Tim.

You have no links showing each individual model for viewing, could you put something up please?

Phil Carlisle   (Jul 04, 2006 at 16:00 GMT)
Man, I'm not doing an RPG, but I'd love to have that rat for a side project.. maybe someday :)

I like that rat!

Peter: That sucks. Only goes to show how this place has changed from what it was when I joined it.

I've seen people selling stuff on Dev snapshots. Evi (Cubix Studio) always puts up a snapshot when he releases a new pack and I've seen tons others. Maybe just have a backlog of shots.

I may disagree on some points with Stefan (especially relating to pack eheh ;) ) but I agree here. Art packs at low price are pretty useful for the coders. So promoting them in a blog should be fine.

Now I understand GG point as well. It's only fair for them and pack makers, to promote their own packs .It's an incoming source, and if we want more quality products and support, they need some funds :). A simple solution could be to publish the pack on GG..

Btw, you should change the background for your objects, it doesn't really emphasize them.

I have no idea where you got that idea. The IOTD is there to showcase development products, whether in TGE or not.

I have no idea why the screenshot was not accepted, but being or not being a GG product had next to nothing to do with it, I'm sure. Otherwise the vast majority of the shots would not have been posted.

EDIT:
@Vas
The pack looks great. Are you going to include a version with source artwork? I would see benefit in rigging the rat and playing with the geometry. As simple as it is, I would like to play with the cart. Maybe that's just me.

EDIT #2:
Just noticed that it came with 3DS. I completely missed the text on the bottom of the screenshot. Nice!

David Blake, I got that idea from the GG employee who is in charge of it. He's a great guy and keeps me informed. I can't disagree with his logic about it either. This is the GG site, they can do as they please with it. You'll notice I haven't posted any more IOTD's about www.ExisExchange.com products.

-- Whoop, just got updated from on high, Apparently it's allowed in .plans.

Long time ago GG was all about the communities for indies, regadless their origin, but the capitalist nature talks to them, only GG related stuff is allowed on the site.

Sad...

But I can understand them... As I can understand Google changing their slogan to something more "harmfulish"... Whatever...

Jonathon Stevens   (Jul 04, 2006 at 18:14 GMT)
Pretty harsh considering they have to survive too. If they are faced with a 'we sell our products at a horribly low cost to indie developers, so we don't make much to support ourselves' then the logical choice would be to try to capitalize where they can.

Even non-profit groups need to think about themselves once in ahwile.

Why in the world would GG try to prevent any sales of art content to this community from people in the community? It's not like there are any competing art content packs for sale by GG games? In fact, there isn't a single art content pack for sale by GG itself. Sure, Tim and Joe are selling some stuff, but they plainly say "Tim Aste's" and "BraveTree".

Maybe this is just a case of an GG employee talking shit in IRC. Sometimes they have bad days and do that. I asked for help a couple of days ago and was told that if I can't do it myself that I shouldn't be making games for a living. Class act. If this info was gained in IRC, those guys are probably just pissed off again. I mean, they hang out in irc all day. Who wouldn't get pissed. I can't believe that GG would really do something like that officially. Maybe the guy who picks the IOTD is making those decisions on his/her own. Empolyees do that all the time.

Considering it took like a month for all the recent resources to be approved, maybe they're just too busy working on TAP to approve the snapshots?

Aaron Ellis   (Jul 04, 2006 at 19:55 GMT)
@Anton

This is somewhat off topic, but what happened to your last .plan? I read part of it yesterday and tried to finish it today, but apparently it had been deleted. Just curious.

Ian \"Xest\" Winter   (Jul 04, 2006 at 20:27 GMT)
Maybe it had adverts for content in it Aaron ;)

Aaron Ellis   (Jul 04, 2006 at 20:49 GMT)
:)

I guess I'll look for it in my browser cache. It was an interesting blog.

@Aaron Ellis

Yeah, I advertised jobs not from GG and it pissed them off and they deleted it.

JUST KIDDING

LOL

I read a post that I could tell was going to lead the blog into a mess of a fight and that was not my intention, so, since I can't delete the post, I deleted the blog. :(

The point of the blog was to make people aware of the jobs coming in a few weeks. I only mentioned bad business sense because... well, it's true... but because learning the business of making games can be done on your own if you want to spend a 10 years doing it... or you can work for a company and learn from them in a year or two. then come back and make your own game. or hell, make your own commercial game with publisher funding. it's not so bad. there's a lot of shitty people out there, but there's also a lot of good people and the answer to fixing the industry isn't just to leave it... but it also would help to fill it with good people. That's my opinion.

Peter Simard   (Jul 04, 2006 at 21:59 GMT)
Great work on the pack. The only issue I have is there are no collision meshes. Without them I cant really use alot of the artwork (crates, tables, beds, etc).

Aaron Ellis   (Jul 04, 2006 at 22:03 GMT)
@Anton

Makes sense. Still liked what I read of it though -- it sounded like great advice for all of us. Maybe you could re-post it with comments turned off. Or that could cause more problems. -sigh-

Thanks for the info

@ Anton; "Maybe this is just a case of an GG employee talking shit in IRC."

Definately not the case - I received an email about my IOTD being taken down (content pack) due to GG not wanting to advertise 3rd party packs.

I belive its a pretty poor way of going about things, I can understand that they obviously dont want the IOTD being flooded with random guys coming in, but I have held a license to TGE since Feb 19, 2003... I would like to think that other longer term license holders like myself would want to give back to the community through offering art content/services where possible, and have GG facilitate that to an extent (not everyone wants to pay $40-50+ for content packs)

Wow that sucks about not being able to advertise 3rd party content packs. Things have certainly changed around here.

I remember when things like the scifi furniture pack where putup on IOTD . If it wasnt for it appearing there i would never have known about it (and subsequently purchased it).

We need more content packs , and not everyone can spend time going through every plan to weed out content pack details. Which is why i used to love the IOTD.

Anyway back to the original topic, great looking models.

These remind me of Dungeon Siege 1 an 2. Very cool. :)

Peter Simard   (Jul 05, 2006 at 03:04 GMT)
Any way to get collision meshes added to the models?

J.C. Smith   (Jul 05, 2006 at 05:09 GMT)
Personally, I want to see all the third party packs on here. Some of them are things that GG might not published themselves, and while I'm sure they want their hands in the pie, isn't INDEPENDENT development what its all about anyway?

Jonathon Stevens   (Jul 05, 2006 at 05:39 GMT)
you guys have really hijacked this blog. how about starting a thread with these rants? i don't think they shouldn't be heard, just not here is all.

Vas   (Jul 05, 2006 at 05:59 GMT)   Resource Rating: 5
@ Peter Simard - fixed , use your reactivated download link for the new version.

@ Jonathon Stevens - i understand your request but atm i just dont have the time to do a complete list with a screenshot for each. I'm working full time on a game project for the causual game portals - the models i offer on my site is just a side job i do in my free time.

thanks
Vas

Chill Jonathon, discussions rise up whether you like it or not. This is true about all kinds of forums and especially the GG forum, where people post in the wrong area, go offtopic - etc, yet I haven't seen you complain there.

I do agree with you though it should be the same everywhere, not just here. But this ain't the case as of today.

------------------------------------------

A question to Vas:

Doesn't this content pack include source art, like for the rat? I was interested in it. I can see how you listed 3DS but not .max or the native Lightwave formats.

I caught some flak for an IOTD that offered my game for pre-sale. They posted it but I got some flak anyway :( I had no idea you weren't supposed to advertise stuff in IOTD's, it doesn't say anything about that on the submission page. But I can totally understand not wanting it to turn into a free ad space... it's supposed to be DEV snapshots afterall, not sales snapshots.

David Montgomery-Blake   (Jul 06, 2006 at 05:10 GMT)
I can definitely understand not wanting it to turn into free sales space, but it is also the first place that I look for new Torque products which are either in development or (more rarely) completed. I love seeing completed projects done in TGE. Especially since the artist page is often not used.
