Blog post

Recently we've alluded to some new projects we're really excited to be working on, and here is one of them!

I am delighted to announce that Dream Games, Inc. and Garage Games have entered into a publishing agreement to bring a Dream Games FPS Starter Kit to the GarageGames Developer store!!

This new project represents the dawn of a new era of feature complete, configurable and documented Starter Kits for Torque brought to you by the magic of collaboration. It will be sold right here on Garage Games.

This starter kit, codenamed BFT (Battlefield Torque), will bring you all the features you expect to see in a modern First Person Shooter game, including various game modes such as Conquest, Death Match, Team Death Match and Capture The Flag!

We will work out all the technical details of features like:
*Multiple player type selection (medics, snipers, engineers, support, assault)
*Team selection
*Scoring
*Server admin (Voting, Map Cycling, Kick, Ban)
*Auto Team Balancing
*Command Maps
*Mission Waypoints
*Weapon scripts (reloading/weapon modes/scopes/weapon spread)
*Linked Resource Radar
*Parachutes
*Inventory
*Vehicles
*Turrets/Anti Aircraft
*Vehicle Threat Alert System
*Custom weapon crosshairs and guis
*Damage Location Modifiers
*Battle Command QuickKeys
*Explodable Objects
*Lots of GUI
*Example missions
*Several new models and vehicles will be included as part of Battlefield Torque, with complete documentation on how to get started customizing the code for your own game.

Work is already well underway and we will provide more information about this upcoming Starter Kit as the project progresses. Our very own Ashtara is heading up the project team!

Great news... Just about every feature I want :)

Now... if you could just release it within the next 2 weeks, that would be great ;) hehe

Good luck on the project... looking forward to the updates.

It will be more than just a few weeks but this project is well under way. I will be sure to post some development notes and screen shots as soon as I can.

This is great!! Congratulations Dream Games and GarageGames!!
Nice to see you guys come up with this. Surely all will benefit from this: GG, DreamGames and (this is most important) - the community.

I'm happy for you guys, keep it up!

wont battlefield (EA games) have some issues with the name?
just wondering.. but hey sounds awesome.. :)

Makes my singleplayer starter kit seem all the more plausible.. :)

This sounds really cool, and I was seriously considering getting the mmo kit, but this is closer to, hell exactly what I need.

I eagerly await.

Michael Perry   (Mar 28, 2007 at 00:17 GMT)
You guys are killing me! I'm gonna have to get an investor for my company, or go bankrupt buying all these kits. . .Congratulations, and I can't wait!

Ashley Kelley   (Mar 28, 2007 at 00:27 GMT)
I think the word "Battlefield" is a little generic to cause EA any issues. But we will certainly look more closely at it.

Trenton Shaffer   (Mar 28, 2007 at 00:32 GMT)
Wait ... hold on ... I blacked out there for a second.

The GG community will appreciate this!

Awesome news! Glad to see that things are far better than some feared.

David Higgins   (Mar 28, 2007 at 02:16 GMT)
heh, with that feature list, I think the "battlefield" name would definately cause EA to get up in arms ... but hey, it's just a codename ... can't wait to see this progress ... Will there be TGE/TGEA versions ?

DodongoXP   (Mar 28, 2007 at 08:13 GMT)
thats terribly awesome..

i just wish it will not take forever and stays in the " coming soon " status for a couple of years like constructor or the ai pack

if you release it.. i will surely buy it the moment it comes out ..

Cheers!

This indeed looks very promising (and not to mention a lot of fun)!

Still, I hate to be sceptical, but will Dream Games commit to this product? I can't help but think about the recent "end-of-life" announcement of a few products from Dream Games that are not even out of beta yet. It would be a shame for people to buy a kit that will be left unsupported in a few months.

So, this means it's some kind of "official" from GarageGames, and I don't see reasons for shame here.
Dream Games do really great stuff, and I wish them only the best with what they do. Sure, it will end-up with only benefits for everyone.

Leroy Frederick   (Mar 28, 2007 at 11:26 GMT)
Sounds great! Congrats on the publishing agreement!

@bank:

Thanks for your reply. I read that statement and I have every confidence in GarageGames' commitment to the products they sell. But there's only so much they can do if the developer drops support for a product. Hence why I asked. No harm intended, just curiosity and a tiny bit of caution =)

Dave Young   (Mar 28, 2007 at 12:28 GMT)
To clarify, we are not dropping support at all for our products, only sales of the 2 MMO kits due to a change in business relationship. The support for those products is increasing significantly, we just made a major update this past Friday and another is on the way! We have also beefed up our teams significantly to ensure that we will meet goals and expectations.

Congrats guys!

Would it be possible to jump from a mmorpg to a fps world? because on my game, im looking to have one world at war, so it would basicly just be a FPS, and then the other worlds would be like a normal mmo

Adam Beer   (May 25, 2007 at 22:32 GMT)
any news on this?

James Pulliam   (May 30, 2007 at 18:29 GMT)
humm, very interesting, and very exciting, as a owner of the mmo kit i do know that dream games are talented programers.

this product sounds exactly like what i been looking for and wanting for a long time now.

but please tell me the weapons will have a recoil system to them. that is one of the fps starter's kit biggest lacking elements is no recoil on gun fire. so please tell me there will be a recoil on weapon's fire.

also what version of torque is this going to be created on? will it be on the latest release of 1.5?

James Laker (BurNinG)   (Jun 12, 2007 at 12:05 GMT)
Wow!... Dunno how I missed this...

Lee Latham   (Jun 12, 2007 at 22:01 GMT)
This is an awesome idea.

Eikon Games   (Jun 19, 2007 at 16:36 GMT)
Hi guys,

We've been pretty psyched about this since it was first announced - how are things progressing?

Ashley Kelley   (Jun 19, 2007 at 17:57 GMT)
We are about to go into Testing mode!!! Soon as we get the bugs all cleaned up we will be making it available. Lots of great stuff here too. Our team has written a completely new flightht physics package for great flying helicopters. We are even getting the mounted turret codes built for better network interface. (In english we are getting rid of the lag). We cannot wait to hear what the gg comiunity has to say about this!!!

Eikon Games   (Jun 19, 2007 at 18:00 GMT)
Wow! I didn't expect it to be so far along - excellent news!

James Pulliam   (Jun 23, 2007 at 22:15 GMT)
wooohoooo, now i am getting even more exited about this, helicopters even?? now that is something worth celebrating!!!!

how are the helicopters going to be controlled? are they going to be like the one's found in the battlefield series?

Will this work for TGEA? Or will there be a version for TGEA?
Edited on Jul 04, 2007 14:14 GMT

Ashley Kelley   (Jul 04, 2007 at 21:03 GMT)
The TGEA version is a little different. But it is staying right up with each each update we make so it should follow the tge version with in a few weeks. So unless you wanna try the conversions on your own to tgea you might wanna wait for that version.

Adam Beer   (Jul 04, 2007 at 21:32 GMT)
Do you have a date of when or around this will be released?

Jon Paynter   (Aug 05, 2007 at 17:03 GMT)
Still doing tweaking and bug squashing. no dates yet.

Adam Beer   (Nov 12, 2007 at 20:45 GMT)
Any news on this? The website says it will be out in a few days but it said that 3 weeks ago.

Dave Young   (Nov 12, 2007 at 22:02 GMT)
It went into QA, came back with some things that need work, we want it to be the best it can be and fully demonstrate the power of Torque. At this time we're hoping for a release before the end of the month, that's pretty realistic from what's on the plate right now.

Eikon Games   (Nov 22, 2007 at 19:19 GMT)
Can't wait to see this when it comes out.
Is the feature list in the original post complete? Has anything been added / dropped? Anything you can tell us about? ;o)
