Getting oriented. Testamonial.
After running the demo's and playing with the Orc and racer, I began to realize how well organized these folks are. Reading the overview further impressed me. Everything looked good. Everything sounded good. And the reading was efficient and informative.
So, I shelled out the bucks.
In the space of an hour with the getting started doc, I had a good handle on what is needed for level design, geometry and models. Ibedded links quickly took me to the tools I needed. JRE 4.2 installed and running. (Surprised to see M$ JVM is no longer available.) JEdit installed and running. TIDE downloaded. Blender researched. (My artist will be able to use this just fine for now.)
Started reading the how to doc on putting the game together. As a former database programmer, all of this made sense. Right off, I know to restrain feature creep and that 90% of the effort will be tweaking/debugging after prototyping. A million ideas are still running around in my head and have yet to settle down into a spec. For the moment, though, I know we need to have an environment where players can interact. So that will be the first step - prototype players logging in and being able to run around and see each other, bump into each other and the other basics.
