Blog post
Hi All,

I was going to spam a copy of my latest blog post, but I'll save it for those interested in the click-through.

To summarize: my business (Novaleaf Software) is doing too good! I'm going to have to start managing a team doing C# client development, so that means my direct contribution to my "2dMMO" needs to be cut down.

Instead, I'll be hiring 2 or 3 game developers to take over the game dev work, and I'll just do architecture/game design for the time being.

Happy times here in Bangkok Thailand, but honestly I'm a bit annoyed at the distraction this additional work/revenue is going to cause.

I was just wondering, how much it costs to hire a coder somewhere like Thailand.

Of course at the moment, I'm still trying to scrape my jaw off the ground at what I'm having to pay a Norwegian guy to do phone based tech support from home. I certainly will not be hiring a Norwegian resident coder any time soon, I can tell you. But I could bet I could hire a couple of Thai coders for what thats costing :-)

Generally I see costs in thailand a little higher than in china (but weirdly enough, lower than india), due to cost of living, and the fairly tight IT marketplace. For us, we charge aprox USD3000/dev/month, for someone with aprox 2 years work experience and a bachelors degree in CS.

Though, keep in mind that price doesn't include a project manager, which is generally needed (at least part time) for any project scoped beyond 1 person.

I havent done any research into my local "competition" and how much they charge, but honestly I dont really care, because they go after the domestic market (government contracts mostly) and dont speak much English.

Also, FYI the cheapest outsourcer I've seen is in china for about USD1500/dev/month, but I dont have any idea what their quality or English competency is.

Interesting.
Well for us being based in South Africa we can do work of a fraction of the cost it would be in USA or Europe and still make good money. The US$ is about 7X our currency but the living cost is probably about 8X lower.
We have done some coding work and some 3D / 2D work for overseas clients and they where very happy with the quality work and our fees.

I suppose one needs to look at cost where you are based vs what you can get the work done for.
Also if a market is saturated with experienced developers that can't find work the prices will drop accordingly even though that developer might be very experienced.

Glad to see it's going well with you. Keep up the good work!
