TSE milestone 1
Whew, October is and has been a crazy month. The first half was spent crunching for IGC preparations, planar reflections, and milestone 1. Since then it's been recovering from IGC and finishing off everything for milestone 1. Now I'm leaving tomorrow to go home to New York for my sister's wedding. I hope November is a little more relaxed!

So we're at milestone 1, FINALLY! It's all checked in now, the new milestones will be posted very soon, and there's some docs that still need to get done, but codewise we're there. I didn't think it would take this long, and I'm expecting the rest to go more quickly. We're going to be releasing the great demos that Tim Aste put together for IGC over the next few weeks, so look for those announcements and check them out. The TSE IGC presentation slides will also be released sometime soon, so if you're interested, they will be available.

I can't wait to get done with milestone 2; I think we'll get more done in less time for it (hopefully), and we'll have more impressive stuff too, so that's all going to be good. The plan is to get most of the outdoor work done for it. We're targeting terrain, water, and vehicles. After that we're going to slay bugs like madmen for milestone 3 and take care of some missing features and other small issues that are complicating the porting process from TGE. We want to stabilize as best we can at that point and encourage you guys to jump in and start building with it.

Vehicles..... Did I hear..... VEHICLES!?!??!?!?
Yes please!

So does this mean that the GFX "device" is ready for OpenGL now?

Marco Meier   (Oct 26, 2004 at 05:06 GMT)
Great Work with Milestone 1!
I'm looking forward the Milestone 2.

Alexander posted an interesting question.
Is GFX already ready for OpenGL or does this take some more time? Maybe with Milestone 2 or so?

Terrain,water,vehicles oh my :)

Ben Garney   (Oct 26, 2004 at 16:38 GMT)
It's _ready_, we just don't have any implementation to put behind it yet...

Paul Kreemer   (Oct 26, 2004 at 17:00 GMT)
Vehicles?! I thought TSE was mostly graphics-layer work - and I can understand water and terrain being areas to focus on improved rendering. What kind of vehicle improvements?

thanks-
Paul

Please, Please, Pleeeeease make waterblocks that you can rotate and scale properly. Biggest problem we have right now is that I can't tilt a waterblock so that the water looks like it is flowing slightly downhill.

That and being able to page those gorgeous 10,000 meter view tiles I saw and my eyes will be on a switch to TSE for our project.

@Paul Kreemer:

Maybe you don't use vehicles that much. We do and I run into crash after crash after crash, mostly when colliding with stuff. Now, that's probably not what's going to be fixed, but it would be cool nevertheless.

it would also be nice to see if you can get a higher top speed for the wheeled vehicle without losing control

Paul Kreemer   (Oct 27, 2004 at 03:28 GMT)
I'm all for vehicle improvements! I just expect to need TGE for my customer base, so hopefully any hoped-for vehicle physics improvements in TSE will get back to TGE.

Brian Ramage   (Oct 27, 2004 at 03:40 GMT)
Ahh, on the vehicles, I was just going to port them over from TGE, since they aren't checked in for TSE. I'll take a look if there's crash problems there. No special TSE vehicles or anything )

OpenGL is still not ready, it's a really low priority right now, sorry guys, there's too much to be done in other areas. If someone wants to help out on creating an OGL device though, it would be quite welcome!

James Laker (BurNinG)   (Oct 27, 2004 at 04:38 GMT)
Damnit... you just got my hopes up... to let it crash and Burn again.... :)

Gabor Forrai   (Oct 28, 2004 at 13:38 GMT)
When ive just buyed the early adaptation of TSE, never thought that this development is just gettint the milestone 001 in october.
Dont kick me, looks like im impatient, but looks like TSE needs a really a lotsa lot of works while its will be finished, just becouse the milestone numbered only 001. Anyway...good luck and speed up the development if possible... ;)

@Gabor - try tearing away the demo from it and dig in you'll find there IS more than enough to start building a project with this..

Brian Ramage   (Nov 02, 2004 at 15:36 GMT)
@Gabor - trust me, I'm more frustrated by this than you are. I don't think there will be any distractions like Xbox development or IGC for a while, so things will pick up.
