Well, I've been in America, and specifically Oregon, for almost a week now. We arrived Monday, after a gruelling 36 hours of flying almost halfway around the globe, in Eugene Airport. From there we headed up to Roseburg, about an hour or 2 outside of Eugene, to meet up with the folks of the Douglas Forest Protective Association.
This week we've been installing hardware, climbing up lookout towers on the top of mountains, driving through the beautiful forests here, and generally just working our asses off, 12 hours a day. Hoo boy.
Like a true Torquer though, theres always a part of me that is conscious of the fact that GG is just over there somewhere. Must. make. plan. to. get. there. Probably won't be until next week though. Assuming no crises.
Its a funny place this. You guys are so similar to us, yet at the same time there are some subtle yet fundamental differences in culture. Everyone is really friendly and welcoming though, which is great. And the crime rate is so much lower here. I was amused to discover that not only do you drive on the other side of the road, the toilet handles are on the other side too! Arb, but amusing. Your television is a bit annoying though. We have 80 channels in the motel, and if you flip through them, at any one time 80% will be showing adverts. Ugh. Another thing thats funny is that you'll flip through and watch a commercial for some junk food, then one for diet pills or exercise machines, then one for junk food, etc etc. Good thing I brought books.
Anyway, cheers for now, back to the grind!

My g/f grew up in the US and she is constantly remarking about how similar we are in South Africa, but at the same time so completely different.
Enjoy your stay - there's loads of stuff to see & do!
