Blog post
So after much hard work, and the assistance of Tom Bampton (God of Sarcasm, and Sour Cream), I finally have a version of my game working that smoothly transitions from skin A to skin B. It fades out the music from A, then starts the music from skin B as it fades in the new skin. I still have some tuning I need to do on the timing of when things happen, plus I have a couple very ugly hacks in place (*cough* implicit z-ordering of brick covers *cough*) but it *works*. YAY!

On top of that, I've got pretty new particle effects, courtesy of a contract art house that will remain nameless until I get permission to specifically mention them. However, their contribution to my game will not go unmentioned: They have produced 8 shiny new particle effects for me, for the Fire, Radioactive Rose, Fruit Salad, and Vegas Nights skin. (The last skin having not yet been implemented on my new engine and so no screenshots just yet...)

The effects fall into two categories: 1) A "trail" that follows the active block around, and 2) An effect indicating the destruction of bricks as they are removed.

So without further ado, here ya go:

Cool, love the backgrounds, hate sour cream though.....

I love the art, very slick. The fruit salad, while making me hungry, seems to be 'brighter than the sun'... Is there a way for the player to change the color of the empty blocks to something darker?

The "Fruit Salad" skin is still in development. I'm experimenting with adding a sky and floating clouds in the background, and making the board a bit lighter than how it used to look. Basically, giving it a more "summer"-y feel. My graphic designer gets stuck with cleanup. :) It used to look like this:

I like the darker "board area" a lot brighter than the lighter one - I physically squint at the lighter one.

I agree with Michael, but the game looks great overall :)

Like I said, my graphic designer will address issues like that -- I just threw it together as a proof-of-concept. The black-bordered board was bugging me because it kind of detracts from the "summer" theme, but I'm sure there's a way to have good contrast and maintain the desired feel of the skin.

nice lumines clone...it was my favorite psp game. Is this just a learning exercise or do you plan to release this at some point?

Jon Frisby   (Jun 19, 2006 at 21:16 GMT)
I plan to release it on Mac and Windows -- platforms not addressed by Q with Lumines itself (PSP, with cell phone and XBox Live coming soon).
