Blog post
Well, here's an update on the Gemstone Texture Pack! Much progress has been made, including the addition of new images to the queue and the refinement and completion of the Agate Textures (see the image below). I could release the Agate Textures within the next couple of days (need to get them up on the server somehow), or I could hold them until I have a few groups of textures done, or some magic number of total textures.

I'd like opinions, on what everyone would like to see in terms of numbers and types of textures per download. Would you rather see the downloads in gem groups? As in Agate Textures, Emerald Textures, and so on? Or would you rather see a variety in one download? All the precious stones together; all the semi-precious together, or some other grouping? What's a good number for download?

Here's a little eye-candy. This is just an image map of all the textures together - for viewing. Upon release, the textures each have their own separate .png file, so you can do whatever you want with them. They'll be free for use however you want - commercial or non-commercial - but credit is greatly appreciated. :)

Hmmm... you know, down on that level, they have a very organic texture that could easily be used as a base texture for something else. A dragon's skin? An alien's eye? A marble floor? I don't suspect I'd actually use them for gems in a game.... really too much detail for that.

Here are the same textures applied to spheres, so you can see the detail and tiling. I'm using gameSpace, which automatically wraps the material according to the mold. (I chose spherical.) I also tiled the textures three times along the x and y, because they were blurry when only applied once. I think they look really nice.

@Jay: Ben mentioned that they could also be used high tech as reflective metals. They have a wide application, I think. And there are more to come. I've also finished Alexandrite textures which I'll be adding here in a moment.

Alexandrite Spheres

Alexandrite is a very pretty, clear stone. These particular examples are faceted. Below are the textures and those textures applied to spheres again.

I already see an opportunity to use them on a sci-fi game I'm planning.
They would be very very quickly used on spheres to simulate planets.

@ Stephan: I'm glad. :) I have two or three more sets complete for people to look at it. I'm going to add them here in a little while. I've also been applying the textures to some gem shapes that i made, and that gives an idea of how they look on faceted shapes.

I have to admit, the alexandrite on the spheres DOES look like eyes of various different colors and types. Or flatten those spheres and you'd have interesting scales for fish, dragons or lizards.

Okay, here's three more sets of textures/spheres for your viewing pleasure. I'm still deciding how to release these and when, so you have any suggestions, please pass them along!

Amethyst is a clear purple stone, often faceted into many shapes.

Andalusite is a rare, clear stone, only found in certain areas of the world.

Apatite is a very soft stone. It comes in clear and opaque configurations, and many colors. Unfortunately, it's too soft to use for jewelry, so we don't see it very much, despite its attraction.

This is the last group I'm going to post here. May release them all as a set, or wait and do a mix with some others. Opinions?

Are those textures seamless? they don't seem to.
They would nicely fit a TGB marble game.

Gina-Marie \"Netjera\" Hammer   (Apr 04, 2007 at 20:07 GMT)
ALL of the textures are seamless. Not one of the textures that Ive shown has a seam. They DO have repeating patterns. Gemstone matrix essentially follows logic. I could have skewed off the textures to remove some of the repeating features, but then the patterns would have ceased to look like gemstones.

I think we can all agree that they're multi-applicational. As an example, here is a pedestal I covered with mixedApatite - makes a nice marble texture, don't you think? Marble Pedestal I also used black apatite to make the grip of a knife I modeled last night. (If I can get image shack to load before midnight, I'll post it so you can see.)

If you download the packs, and for some reason you think a texture isn't quite seamless *enough*, just let me know and I can adjust it for you. I want these textures to be the best they can, while still representing what they're supposed to be.

Nice pack! Andalusite spheres really rocks :)
This pack will be to release here in the GG store ? If yes...when ?

Gina-Marie \"Netjera\" Hammer   (Apr 05, 2007 at 20:58 GMT)
@ Gabor: Thanks! I have to sort some things through the server and then I'm going to just release, at least the first several, as a resource. If there's a big enough call for textures, maybe I'll do some and sell them later. I know I had a lot of trouble finding gemstones because they're non-standard. Lots of grass and metal, that sort of thing. But nothing like this, really.

I'd look for the resource next week or the week after maybe. :)
