Whew.... Its been over a month since I've posted. I've been busting my behind to get the materials for my first TorqueSchool course ready for prospective students.
Unfortunately many of the other instructors involved with TorqueSchool right now are so busy making their own materials that I haven't received very much feedback (comments/criticisms) on my materials. The little feedback I have gotten has been all positive, but I know there are things in there that perhaps you could point out.
There are obvious spots missing, and I have left highlighted notes/comments in there that point out where I already plan to add more. If you see an area that could use more description, pictures, examples, etc... let me know!
The course preview is going online at TorqueSchoo.coml Monday, September 17th (Constitution day!). It is meant to give you a taste of what this course will offer. The full course will go beyond textbook style materials, with:
* 200+ pages of graphical lecture material and tutorials.
* Videos that complement the written materials (lecture and tutorials).
* Communication with instructors and peers via IRC, forums, email, and phone.
* I'll be available for One-on-one and group assistance almost every day.
* Yours and your peer's submitted assignments will be available to download to learn from and critique.
* Links to other relevant information, further reading, and book recommendations.
* Access to future sessions of the course, including all updated materials, for 90 days after purchase (~3 sessions).
So, here it is: the preview of my Intro to Torque Art with Milkshape course. I've spent the better part of 6 months working on this in one form or another, and when it is completed it should go above and beyond anything comparably priced.
If you like what I've done so far and would like to see more, go to www.TorqueSchool.com and pre-register for the course to take advantage of Introductory price of $80, which will go up to $200 after September 30th. The full course will be starting Monday, October 15th. We might make the course materials available prior to the actual launch date.
Hope it sheds some light on the process of creating Game Art.
Happy Torquing!

Sorry about the PDF corruption/confusion, must not have uploaded properly. I've re-uploaded the PDF, and here are two mirrors of it:

Let me know what you think!

You asked for some feedback, so here is some feedback :)
Your particular course offering looks good. It's the one that interests me most of the ones there now. I'm kind of on the fence as to whether to take it or not. I probably will. I've done very little with Torque so far, but I'm one of these people that has been meaning to for a long time. When I finally do work with Torque, it will probably be TGE and I'll be using Maya to do it, although I'm still a beginner when it comes to Maya and 3D art in general. So what I would be hoping to get out of a class like this, is a feel for the Torque art pipeline, some learning about 3-d art in general, and some confidence in creating simple 3-d textured and animated objects and how I might go about getting those into TGE.
Ok, now the feedback. I kind of dread the bit about the group project(s). I'm not real keen on that. Since we only have a certain amount of time to complete them, and classes I'm assuming will be small, I hate the idea of being forced to work with someone else, who may have different schedules, ideas, and experience level than I do. If I happen to meet someone on the forum that I click with, fine, but otherwise I don't like the idea.
For me, I also find it a little troubling that the classes (including this one) that I've looked at mention that it is assumed you are familiar with Torque/TGE. Well, like I said above, I'm a TGE noob :( That's what I'm coming to Torque school for... to get familiar with TGE.
A couple of other little things. Geez guys, you need a *lot* of work on that website of yours. It's not real clear the first time you visit the site where to learn about classes, and policies, and pricing and the like (that ought to be front-and-center on your site). Also, like someone else mentioned, I would think it is a no-brainer that you guys would want to put all the info about your classes out there for anyone to see, to make them *want* to register, rather than the other way around. Also, I think while $80 is a bargain, $200 is way too much (my opinion), at least until you get more established. Just as a comparison, I'm taking art classes at the community college right now for way less than that and they last several months with live instructors. And one of your competitors (www.gameinstitute.com) has classes that are in that price range but are far far more extensive, and they are far more established and professionally presented at this point.
Good luck to you, I think Torqueschool is a very cool idea, and hope it succeeds big-time.

As for your other feedback, it's very much appreciated and we will strive to up the notch.

Regarding the group assignments. In the "Real world" (of Indie development at least) you'd be hard pressed to find someone who has the same experience, ideas, or schedule that you do. Part of the class involves being able to figure out what you can do collaboratively, who will do what, methods of communicating and scheduling, etc.
With that said, your grade won't suffer because your partner didn't do their part. When you find someone in the class you're comfortable working with, I'll ask you to make a post on the forums outlining what you're going for, who does what, etc. That way I'll know who was doing their part and who slacked off, if any.
Regarding "assuming knowledge of TGE"... there will be a TGE 101 class coming up, which would probably be a good place for you to start. My class would build off of that basic knowledge (or the knowledge you would otherwise get from learning it on your own for months).
Yes the Website leaves much to be desired. We wanted to get the bare-bones functionality working and get you guys looking at the course. We are definitely taking this feedback to heart and should have a much cleaner, informative site in the upcoming weeks.
In my haste to re-construct this post from my short term memory, I know I have missed things. Feel free to continue asking questions if you have them. I aim to please. :-)
P.S. To All: Copy and Paste your posts (especially Important ones) into a Notepad before submitting. Will save you many headaches!

*shrug* that's certainly true, but what does learning group project dynamics have to do with learning the torque art pipeline?
