Company Logo. Opinions ?
My company name is Spunky Games. I registered the business name about a month ago, and have been trying to figure out a good logo evers ince.

I had a photoshop friend of mine throw together some logos for me, and I couldn't really decide which one to use.

I asked on irc 2 days a go, and everyone said 6... I asked yesterday and noone could agree on anything... So I threw together a little logo of my own.

I need to choose one soon. So feel free to vote for the one you like best.

The 6 my friend made:

The one I made:

I personally like 5. Everyone felt that 6 needed something but noone could realy give me a definitive answer, so now Im asking you guys.

EDIT: Just a note. Most people understand why I can't use logo 2 ;)

2 looks really cool and would get stuck in my mind, much like the old Blizzard logo. But it won't look good on prints and such.
Nr 5 is a favourite, and then nr 6.

Anders Linder-Noren   (Sep 01, 2005 at 14:58 GMT)
Nr 6 is my favourite. Looking really nice, but so does nr 5... Guess im not helping much, eh? hehe, good luck though. Atl least you got some good logos to choose from. I am having a nightmare trying to figure out designs...

I agree with Chris, I like #5.

@Jason: you saved 4 characters and yet made your post almost unreadable.

I hope I don't offend, but I don't think any of the logos are very good. You're selecting from 6 amateurish options. I would send your friend back to the drawing board.

Remember that you're setting the image for your company - font, logo, colours and so on. These things will need to be on business cards (possibly in colour), letterhead, fax cover pages, emails, websites and, of course, your game. Keep the colours simple for the base logo - you can always add flair to things like splash screens.

Your statement is vague. Care to offer an example ?

6 looks the best by far. It looks like a real logo, and it fits the name. 3, 4 and 5 look ok, but they certaintly dont look "spunky" to me.

Mark Storer   (Sep 01, 2005 at 16:41 GMT)
Six!

Vernon Finch   (Sep 01, 2005 at 16:47 GMT)
Six without a doubt.

Ryan C. Seirks   (Sep 01, 2005 at 16:52 GMT)
6 for sure.

Linhart Walter   (Sep 01, 2005 at 17:02 GMT)
6, or back to the drawing table

Benjamin Bradley   (Sep 01, 2005 at 17:03 GMT)
Do the squint test... when you squint can you read any of the names.... #6 is the clearest one for me when I squint.

@Chris: I agree with Tim on the base that keeping it simple is best. I don't think any of the images are really bad but not great either. When your looking at a company logo you generally want to keep it to 3-color for simplicity, silk screening t-shirts as well as letterhead and stuff. Fades, shadows and highlighting don't translate well to things like tshirts, hats and letterhead, normally...

Now the more complex color scheme you are lookign at in #6 can work fine in print and on tshirts, but you are always going to have to front up the cash for high quality full color screenings, same when your printing letterhead, or flyers and things like that.

That is why a lot of companies keep the logos simple and with 3 or less colors... Think about the IBM, AT&T, Verison or GG logos all are simple, low color logos with basic font styles and no effects such as showing, fades or highlighting. You can always add 3D effects, shadowing and more colors when you are doing high quality presentations for Booth banners and tradeshows as needed. But is is really difficult to get a high rez base image to look good (or even recognizeable) in a low quality print screen or letterhead. I think that is what Tim was trying to say.

Now that is just normal practice. If you are happy with your designs then none of that matters. If yoru sticking with those design choices I licke #5 followed by #6.

Number 6 by far. It is fun and approachable. It works well with the word "Spunky" since it has slightly rotated, off-kilter letters. It looks spunky. The small red star really does something to add to the logo.

Perhaps you can come up with several derivatives on that logo and see what else jumps out at you.

Nathan Waggoner   (Sep 01, 2005 at 17:59 GMT)
I like # 6, I think it is missing depth. Try adding in a different color for either the area behind the letters or the leters. I was thinking a red, yellow, or orange.

Joshua Dallman   (Sep 01, 2005 at 18:13 GMT)
6

Chris "Spectre-7" Randolph   (Sep 01, 2005 at 18:34 GMT)
I like #6, but mostly because it reminds me of the Funimation logo.

There's something very family oriented and fun about that logo. Personally, I'd fill the letters in with bright primary or maybe pastel colors, each letter a different color or some such. I suppose that's only if you don't mind your company logo looking like the Toys R Us logo.

Regardless, keep in mind that you can always change it later. Go ahead and choose something you like right now, and plan to have something better down the line. As long as you're just in start-up phase, branding isn't really a huge issue yet. My marketing intuition says a company logo won't be a necessity until you have product. Most gamers are introduced to developers game first, after all. In the mean time, pick something that makes you happy and roll with it. :)

The "games" part is always too small. If seen at a glance most of these logos would just look like spunky. I like 5 the most.

6, but more because it is clear and clean. the others suffer from small font, non-contrasting colors, or just 'messy' look.

Corey Martin   (Sep 01, 2005 at 19:12 GMT)
#6, with a different color inside the letters. Perhaps yellow.

Melv May   (Sep 01, 2005 at 19:25 GMT)
#6. It oozes fun which is what it's all about. :)

4 with a different background could look good. The circular gradient in the center kinda drowns out the letters because it uses the same colour. 2 has a similar problem.

If not #6 then. It just seems the most professional but the standard photoshop glow doesn't look too good.

Depends on what type of games you're aiming to develop IMO.

To a point I am kind of along the lines of Tim Sullivan. I think that with a little more time into it (go from 5 and 6) something better could be brought to the front.

In my opinion (and from not a huge amount of experience, I can be totally off base) if the logo you want doesn't jump out at you and you have to take second opinions (although there's nothing wrong with them at all) you may want to try a few more ideas.

John Rockefeller   (Sep 02, 2005 at 05:58 GMT)
#4 and #6, for sure. Those are the highest quality there.

Andrew Nicholson   (Sep 02, 2005 at 08:56 GMT)
#5 or #6

James Laker (BurNinG)   (Sep 02, 2005 at 09:28 GMT)
2 looks like a stripclub sign...

6 kicks ass...

Ward De Langhe   (Sep 02, 2005 at 11:13 GMT)
1,3 and 4 are looking 80's-90's style. I wouldn't use those.
Number 6 is the only one that is good looking and easy to use (can be put on any background and will still look good), I'd defenetly go for 6

Timothy Aste   (Sep 02, 2005 at 11:35 GMT)
#4 would be my favorite of the bunch, but only if the text was flat instead of 3d I think.

Brian Hunter   (Sep 02, 2005 at 12:24 GMT)
#6 - the rest look like they were done in 2 steps using a Dummies Guide to Photoshop. Harsh, but honest in my eye.

Unsung Zero   (Sep 02, 2005 at 14:06 GMT)
I'd go with #5.
Though #6 is more suited to the basic bob style.
Hrmm.

Chris Labombard   (Sep 02, 2005 at 15:14 GMT)
Unsung Zero - Basic Bob has it's own logo. This is strictly for my company.
