Hi Everyone!

I've been pretty busy with a lot of different things, including the birth of my first grandaughter, Emily Catherine Marie McGinnis on the 18th of Feb. ( I know, you all thought I was a spring chicken, but I'm actually 43 yrs old...really getting up there, huh? ). Baby is doing fine and so is mom...the jury is still out on how dad is doing. =)

Kyle has been updating www.monsterpacks.com as of late, the bulk of the code is complete now there is just a few cosmetic things I'd like to change and it will be pretty much where I want it. We haven't added anything new lately, I've been working on updates for previous packs, particularly the Warehouse District Pack and the Alley Ambiance Pack. I'd finished the last "big" update on the the Downtown District Pack back in December and hopefully everyone who had picked it up got the email with the download link. If you didn't, let me know an I'll make sure that happens. Also the final thing Kyle's adding to the www.monsterpacks.com site is an updater system to add updated content to your download directories. Hopefully he will have that all up and running soon.

I've not been working on anything in particular ( outside of several small contract jobs ) and the updates, but I figured it was time to show off some stuff that I've been up to lately. So without further ado here are a bunch of screens of current content that we have in the works -

Here are a couple early shots of an "Ancient Ruins Pack" that I have just started:

Here are a few from a "Damaged Buildings Pack" with a tileable basic city "Grid":

And here are a couple from a "Sci Fi Interiors Pack" that I've been working on a bit:

And last, but not least, some screens from "Swords of Avalon: Mech Deathmatch" Josh and I have actually PLAYED it several times...yeah, yeah, I know it's hard to believe that I've actually gotten around to playing something I've worked on, but wow...you'd be amazed at how helpful that is...the mechs are from www.3drt.com and so is the one weapon, but pretty much everything else in the game screeshots is our stuff:

Also, if you've gotten ahold of me and I haven't written back, fire off another email. I receive a reasonable amount of mail on a pretty regular basis, and if I haven't written back it's not that I'm ignoring you, it's just that I'm trying to cover a lot of bases and sometimes I forget what I have going on and with whom.
Ian and Marc come to mind right off the bat, but I'm sure there are others...I don't mind getting a reminder that I need to correspond better, it keeps my mind active when you get as old as I am...and get those darn kids off the lawn! =P

@Alan James: I just wanted to say, while I love the models you folks put out (they are the best we have aquired so far), I'd love to see DTS versions of some of the packs or having some DTS alternatives. I know you have done this in the past, so call it a feature request. I wouldn't mind paying a bit more for DTS versions of all the DIF models, just to help with load time and lag.

*Just note, we've emailed each other on this before, but I thought I'd bring it up here as well.

@Everyone, Thanks!

@Ian, got the email, I'll see what I can come up with...that game looks pretty cool btw.

@Thak, if you're still interested, I realized that I'd never converted the models over to .obj or .3ds, but I have all of them in .ms3d (milkshape) format...I know it's not the optimal choice, but if you happen to have it I'd still be glad to bundle them up and let you mess around with them. Just let me know.

@Chris H. Yes, I would like to do DTS versions also, the main reasons I haven't is:
a) I'm pretty much an "old school" modeler and I'm really familar with BSP/CSG modeling...mesh work is a little bit different animal and I'm just not as strong there as I guess I ought to be.
b) I've come up with a Art Pipeline to convert .MAP all the way out to .DTS, but I think it's building up a lot more faces than would be necessary if I just "did it the right way".
c) I'm also pretty crappy at UV mapping (and not really crappy, just painfully slow), so even if I could get a decent mesh made (actually I'm fairly sure I can) some of us might not live long enough to see me put out a nice UV map.
d) I'm kind of stuck trying to decide that if I do focus on some DTS versions, should I go standard, i.e. with collision meshes and such, or aim at the growing number of folks adopting polysoup for TGE/TGEA and drop collision meshes.

With all this said, it is definitely not out of the question. In fact the update for the Warehouse District and the Alley Ambiance Pack may see a few more additional DTS assets included.

I guess the question I'd have for you (and others) is have you adopted the polysoup resources for your work, and how has the lighting been in that situation? I had an early build of it in, but my player could still penetrate a good number of the models I made so I was unsure of heading down that road. Input on that particular area by anyone actually would be appreciated.

Thanks again all,
Alan

Alan,

Awesome 3d work as always, my friend!

Chris Harpan   (Mar 02, 2008 at 22:22 GMT)
@Alan James: No we haven't integrated polysoup yet. I'm actually working on a few projects and haven't had the time as of yet, but I'm also beginning research on building a multifunctional AI for TGE/TGEA as well. Too many projects, too little time I guess.

In talking to my partner, he might be able to help you out on the UV mapping. I'll ask him to post here or send you an email.
