So I've been going crazy working away at Code Name: Monster Island. So for a little fun I'd thought I'd reveal a little of what might turn out to be the style of the opening scenes and cut scenes. I was going to wait on some of this until I was sure if this was the way I wanted to go or IGC, but I go nuts not posting stuff. I really appreciate everyones input always and especially appreciate the efforts of everyone to make the GG community a great place to hang out. Ok, so here is a little of what I'd did on my 4th off...

Have a great 4th.

Kick ASS, I will be the first to say I like it ;) Keep it up.

That is really neat. Are you going to Indie Games Con this year by chance? Last year everyone really enjoyed it.

Awesome style! If the cutscenes are like that...and your game looks the way it's looked in posts...CN:MI is going to be tremendous.

Thanks guys,
And just to avoid any confusion about me having decent artistic skills these are produced from screenshots that have been edited to give the comic book effect:

My freehand artwork is *ALOT* slower and less impressive. This blackhawk took me a couple hours and it's pretty basic:

At that rate CN:MI probably wouldn't come out until after Duke Nukem Forever. If that soon.

@Matt, Yeah IGC 2005 was a lot of fun, we should be there this year again...

Cool Alan!

Now that's the way to make a comic book.

Your still my hero.

What's the editing process you're using, Alan? Looks like a filter or two in Photoshop but could you tell us which ones?

Beautiful work Alan. Your project is an inspiration.

Hmm, I was actually planning on using comic book style to do the cutscenes in my TGB platformer. Pretty neat.

Alan,

One word, FANTASTIC!

@N R Bharathae

Actually using the GNU Image Manipulation Program better know as The Gimp. In its Filter section, under Artistic is one called Cartoon...of all things...there are two slider adjustments in that filter, you just kind of have to mess with them to get the flavor of outlining that you want. Then, in the case of the "Manga" BW one just Desaturate it under the Layer - Colors menu and finally in all of them under the Layer - Colors option bring the Brightness-Contrast Filter each up until it gives you nice solid blacks and a "Comic Book" look.

I've been checking out, Sgt. Rock, GI Combat, Weird War Tales, etc. Comic Books. There's still a lot to do to get anything near the incredible style these and other classic comics had -

but hopefully it will look cool when it's all put together in the end.

Got it, Alan. Thanks.

Given it's just image filtered screenshots, and most shaders are just realtime image filters, it makes me think it'd be really cool to render a game in realtime with some "comic book" type shaders, to have a drawn rendering style that isn't just the typical flat cel-shading.

This looks great! Thats a really cool idea.. the filters to make it look like a comic. Nice job!
