Swimming in code
Started this week on a long and probably strange trip that will lead to my MMOish game. Step 1 is to get a handle on TGE since I haven't bothered to look at it in 4 years. Back when I bought it, around the time this place started up, there were no docs to speak of so I shelved it until things could mature a bit. I'm happy to see that there is quite a bit of docs now and the search has been an invaluable resource for finding the answers I've needed thus far.
Since an MMO is a 24/7 uptime deal and I'm the only one around to maintain the beast, I've started a bit of engine clean-up to get this massive ball of code into a shape that I feel comfortable with. I'll be hunkered down with that for the next couple months but will come out the end with a decent knowledge of the inner workings and a fairly clean codebase. Then the real fun will begin.
Luckily, or unluckily depending on your point of view, I have a ton of time to work on things since I'm an unemployed IT guy over 40. The state of the IT world is sad nowadays and age discrimination is running wild. 20+ years experience doesn't mean anything anymore. *SIGH*

The IT field is in a very sad state :[ Have you checked out www.guru.com ? You could probably pick up some work on there.
If you would be interested in teaching, you would probably do well in passing on what you've learned. The only problem with that would be that you would be "qualifying" more youngin's to take more jobs. At least the jobs that can't be done overseas. :[

I would love to teach. Unfortunately, all decent community colleges want Masters degrees (I don't even have a BS) and uni's want PHDs. The "youngins" aren't the problem, it's the shipping overseas that's the problem.
Well, there's always Walmart. :(
